Getting started with watsonx.data intelligence

Learn how to configure your watsonx.data intelligence environment, and start working with your data.

The steps in this tutorial might differ depending on which platform you are using. If the steps are different, they are marked with the following icons for each respective platform:

If the steps are not marked, they are the same for both platforms.

This tutorial guides you through the following tasks:

  1. Signing up and set up your subscription - for administrators
  2. Setting up your environment - for administrators
  3. Getting started with the main features - for all users

Signing up and setting up your subscription

You can sign up for a personal version of watsonx.data intelligence at no initial cost, or sign up through an email invitation to join your organization's account. The following steps are usually performed by the administrator.

  1. Sign up for the Data Fabric experience. watsonx.data intelligence is part of this experience.
  2. Update your IBM Cloud account to set up payment for services.

To set up the platform on AWS, you must create your IBM SaaS account and use the IBM SaaS Console to access your subscription.

  1. Contact the IBM sales team to have service subscription created on AWS.

  2. Create your IBM SaaS account:

    1. Go to https://aws.console.saas.ibm.com and click Log in.
    2. Click Create account.
    3. In the window that opens, provide the account information. Then, from the Cloud provider drop-down menu, select AWS. Creating the IBM SaaS account
    4. Click Create. Your new account shows up in the list of available accounts.
  3. Verify the available subscriptions

Verify your subscription status, usage limits, and upgrade to a paid plan if needed.

  4. Add users to your account and assign roles to them

Use the IBM SaaS Console to add new users to your account. Roles can be assigned in three scopes:

    • Account - use this to add users to your account.
    • Subscription - use this to add users to your subscriptions.
    • Service instance - these are predefined user roles for the services that you have provisioned. Use this scope to assign predefined user roles for watsonx.data intelligence.
  5. Optional: Create subscription instances

Each product determines the number of instances that you can provision per subscription, but you can have only one instance per trial subscription.

  6. Delegate access by establishing trust between your AWS account and IBM AWS account

Establish trust between your AWS account and IBM AWS account. Define actions that IBM is allowed to perform in your AWS account.

Setting up your environment

  1. Configure storage:

    • Set up Cloud Object Storage An IBM Cloud Object Storage service instance is provisioned automatically with a no-cost plan when you join watsonx.data intelligence. Workspaces, such as projects, require Cloud Object Storage to store files that are related to assets, including uploaded data files or notebook files.
    • An S3 storage bucket is automatically provisioned for you.
  2. Set up user roles and permissions:

    • Use IBM Cloud IAM. Assign watsonx.data intelligence roles to users or access groups. After you add users to your IBM Cloud account, you must assign the appropriate IAM service and platform level roles to provide permissions for watsonx.data intelligence. You have two choices for assigning roles:
      • Set up IAM access groups with a set of roles and add users as members of the access group. All members have the same roles which are updated when the group is updated. For instructions on creating access groups, see Setting up access groups in IBM Cloud docs.
      • Assign roles to individual users. To update roles, you must update each user independently.
    • Use IBM SaaS Console. You can manage both, users and user groups. Note that no custom roles are available on AWS.
      1. From the main menu, select Access Management.
      2. Select the user or a user group and click Assign roles.
      3. Select Services as resource, the name of your subscription, and service instance. Then choose a role you want to assign. You can select one of the predefined roles for watsonx.data intelligence. To add multiple roles, click Add resource and repeat the steps.
      4. Click Assign when done.
  3. Create platform assets catalog.

You can create a Platform assets catalog to share connections across your organization. Any user who you add as a collaborator to the catalog can see these connections.

  4. Create a sandbox project.

A project is where you work with data by using tools and collaborating with your team. You can create an empty project, start from a sample project that provides sample data and other assets, or import a previously exported project. Your project resources can include data, collaborators, tools, assets that run code, and other types of assets.
