Virtual devices
Learn about virtual devices created by BRMS
A virtual storage device is a device description that supports virtual storage, like an actual tape, or optical device description supports actual storage. BRMS provides support for both optical and tape virtual devices. A description for a virtual device can specify one of several media densities and format types.
IBM® i virtual tape images are stored in files on your system disk units. Virtual tape can perform all the physical tape tasks. For additional information about IBM i virtual tape consult the IBM i virtual tape section of the IBM Documentation.
IBM i virtual optical storage devices create images of your data that can be used for backups, distribution, or archiving purposes. These can use either UDF or HPOS formats for the media. For additional information about virtual optical storage, consult the IBM i virtual optical storage section of the IBM Documentation.
The IBM Documentation section, Virtual storage, contains in-depth information about virtual storage and the IBM i.
