Defining relationships between assets

Follow these steps to specify the assets in the repository that are related to the assets that you are submitting and define the type of relationship.

About this task

Assets are listed as part of the content if they are of a relationship type that includes the new asset, or contains the new asset. The reverse is also true if the asset that you are submitting contains or includes another asset , that asset will be listed on the content page for the asset.

Related assets are listed in the Related Assets section on the General Details page for the asset. If you search and find an asset to download, the related assets are listed to make you aware of them. Downloading and evaluating all of the related assets broadens your perspective and supports successful asset reuse.

Procedure

To add related assets to the asset:

  1. In the Submit an Asset or Modify an Asset page, below the attributes, click the Related Assets tab.
  2. On the Related Assets tab, there might be a list of required or suggested relationship types along with required Asset Types for the related assets. For example, an asset of the Release type must be related to an asset of the Business Solution type with the relationship Release for. Suggested relationships will have a (0+) next to the name of the relationship, while required relationships will have a number greater than zero (for example, (1+)). To add a required or suggested relationship:
    1. For the appropriate relationship type, in the Asset Name column click Add asset type. For example, Add Business Solution.
    2. In the Add Related Assets window, enter the name of the asset that you want to include as a related asset, and then click Search. If possible, the search results will be limited to the appropriate asset type.
    3. Select one or more assets that will have a relationship with the asset you are submitting, and then click Add.
  3. OPTIONAL: To add related assets that are not required or suggested (as configured for the type of asset that you are submitting):
    1. Click Add Related Assets. If the Add Related Assets button is not available, an administrator has configured the asset type for the repository or for your community in such a way that you cannot add related assets that are not required or suggested.
    2. In the Add Related Assets window, enter the name of the asset that you want to include as a related asset, and then click Search. The assets that meet your search criteria are listed in the search results view.
    3. Select one or more assets that will have a relationship with the asset you are submitting, and then click Add.
    4. Select the Relationship Type between the asset you are submitting and the asset you selected from the list.

    2. To specify a minimum version for the relationship, select either is or is greater than and type a version number in the Lowest version field. To specify no minimum, leave the field blank.
    3. To specify a maximum version for the relationship, select either is or is less than and type a version number in the Highest version field. To specify no maximum, leave the field blank.
    4. To create a relationship with only the highest version number in the range you specified, select Relate to the highest version in the range; or, to create relationships to all versions within the range, select Relate to all asset versions in the range.
    5. Click OK.
  5. Repeat steps 2 through 4 for all the relationships you want or need to add to the asset.
