Monitoring recommended actions in the Advisor

Use the Advisor page to view, evaluate, and manage events that include a recommended action. Review the recommended actions to understand how to address potential problems in your environment.

For each event that includes recommended actions, you can view details such as the severity, the time it occurred, the device, and the internal resource on which it occurred. You can acknowledge recommended actions, and create reports about them. You can approve or decline the request to add the storage device to your environment. You can also use the filter tags on the upper part of the dashboard to quickly filter your recommended actions.

Viewing recommended actions

To view the list of recommended actions for IBM Storage Insights block storage systems, check out the following information:

  • Modern UI: Click Advisory in the top menu bar.
  • Classic UI: Click Insights > Advisor.
A specific monitored device
  • Modern UI: On the storage system details page, click Advisory in the left menu panel.
  • Classic UI: On the storage system details page, Click Advisor in the General section.
Approval requests for IBM Storage Virtualize storage systems When an IBM Storage Virtualize storage system is integrated with IBM® Storage Insights by using Call Home with cloud services, a request to approve it for monitoring is displayed.
  1. From modern UI, click Advisory in the top menu bar. If you are on classic UI, Click Insights > Advisor.
  2. Depending on the request, complete the following actions:
    • To approve the request, click Approve. After a storage system is approved, all the same metadata collection and monitoring features that were available with a data collector are also available through the Call Home with cloud services connection.
    • To decline the request, click Decline. If you decline the request, the storage system is not monitored. You can access the Advisor page again to approve the request at any time.

Customizing the lists of recommended actions

Click the filter tags on the upper part of the page to quickly filter your recommended actions by severity or acknowledgment status. To show recommended actions of a particular severity or status,click the appropriate tag. The tag is displayed in color. To hide those recommended actions, click the tag again. The tag is displayed without color.

For example, to show only recommended actions that have an error or warning severity, click Critical and Warning. The Critical and Warning tags are active and are displayed in color.

You can also use the list of recommended actions to filter actions, sort rows, and show, hide, and reorder columns. For more information about customizing the list of recommended actions, see Filtering lists, Sorting lists, and Showing, hiding, and reordering columns in lists.

Viewing details of recommended actions

To view the details of a recommended action, click the recommended action in the modern UI or double-click the recommended action in the classic UI. The recommended action details are displayed in a pane.

Exporting recommended actions

You can export recommended actions from the table that displays the recommended actions to a file. For more information about exporting information to a file, see Exporting information to a file.

Types of recommended actions monitored

You can monitor all the Call Home events with recommended actions that are sent by devices to IBM Storage Insights.

Restriction: You might see some events in the element manager or management GUI of your device that are not displayed in IBM Storage Insights. Those events are not displayed because devices don't send all events to IBM Storage Insights.

Use the Advisory page to view and manage recommended actions to understand how to address potential problems in your environment. For each advisory that includes recommended actions, you can view details such as the severity, the time it occurred, the device, and the internal resource on which it occurred. You can acknowledge recommended actions, and create reports about them.

How to navigate in the modern UI?

Click Advisory in the top menu bar to access the recommended actions for your all the monitored storage systems. To view recommendations specific to storage system, click Advisory in the left menu panel from the storage system details page.

Features of the advisory page
  • Displays a data grid with all advisories. At the top of the grid, you can find Severity tags for advisories, such as Critical, Warning, Informational. Each tags are associated with the number and are clickable to filter the table.
  • You can use the drop-down to select the acknowledged, unacknowledged, or both advisories. By default, critical, warning, and unacknowledged advisories are displayed. Also, an AI icon is displayed against the AI based suggestions generated by the IBM Storage Insights.
  • The table includes features like search, filter, settings, column chooser, and export report options.
  • Multi-select options: If a mix of acknowledged and unacknowledged advisory rows are selected, only Cancel appears in the multi select operation bar. If all selected advisory rows are unacknowledged, the Acknowledge option is also available.

Actions available in the vertical dots menu:

In addition to viewing information directly on the page, you can perform the following actions by clicking the vertical dots menu at the end of each advisor row:
  • Acknowledge or Unacknowledge: Successfully acknowledges or unacknowledges the advisory, with an inline notification that appears at the upper right corner. For AI-generated advisories, Acknowledge is not available.
  • View Details: Opens a right panel that displays following information:
    • The advisory name, timestamp, severity, related storage system and its type.
    • Two tabs:
      • Overview: Includes a description (if available), affected resources, and analysis. If multiple resources are affected, a data table lists them (exportable).
      • Recommendations: Provides actionable insights to resolve the potential problems.
Note:
  • You can access advisory details directly by clicking the name in the Advisory column.
  • For your reference, advisories are retained for 28 days before they're automatically removed from IBM Storage Insights.
