Moving analytics to the edge with Edge Analytics
You can use IBM® Edge Analytics to develop streaming applications that are run on an edge system or an IBM Streams service instance in IBM Cloud Pak for Data.
About this task
Service This service is not available by default. An administrator must install this service on the IBM Cloud Pak for Data platform. To determine whether the service is installed, open the Services catalog and check whether the service is enabled.
Edge Analytics enables streaming applications to run on edge computing facilities closer to where the data is being created. For example, consider a company that manufacturers tires and needs to analyze the many sensors and devices to find product defects. Rather than relay all data to an enterprise cloud for computation, the company can analyze their data on a factory floor system that sends only necessary summaries or certain pieces of data to the cloud.
After you install Edge Analytics in Cloud Pak for Data, you get an Edge Analytics service instance ready to manage all your remote edge systems, applications built for the edge, and deployments.
- It has processing capability to perform analytics and machine learning on real-time data.
- It is not the system that produces the data, but:
- It is connected to the devices that produce the data.
- It is located physically close to the devices that produce the data.
To develop applications for the edge, see Analyzing streaming data to get started.
