Installing the Cloud Pak for Data control plane

You can install the control plane in several ways.

Installation options

Choose the appropriate method for installing the IBM® Cloud Pak for Data control plane in your environment:

Method Use this method if...
Command-line interface Recommended for most environments.

This method uses the Cloud Pak for Data command-line interface (cpd-cli) to install Cloud Pak for Data on the cluster.

The cpd-cli utility provides multiple options and advanced configurations for processing images, installations, and upgrades. It also provides additional commands, such as status and patch, which are not supported by the Cloud Pak for Data Operator.

OpenShift® terminal The Cloud Pak for Data Operator is installed on the cluster. For details, see Setting up the Cloud Pak for Data Operator.

Compatible with operator installations from Red Hat Marketplace.

This method provides a simple and prescriptive installation mechanism that you can easily automate in situations where it is not possible to trigger the Cloud Pak for Data command-line interface (cpd-cli).

However, this method does not offer all of the features that are available when using the cpd-cli utility.

OpenShift Console The Cloud Pak for Data Operator is installed on the cluster. For details, see Setting up the Cloud Pak for Data Operator.

Compatible with operator installations from Red Hat Marketplace.

This method provides a simple and prescriptive installation interface for installing Cloud Pak for Data from the OpenShift Console.

However, this method creates a custom resource definition, so it does not offer all of the features that are available when using the cpd-cli utility.
