z/VM
z/VM® is a mature hypervisor that provides good performance and more options to control resources and simplify resource sharing. Furthermore, z/VM provides more facilities for monitoring the environment and interaction among z/VM instances. z/VM reaches unprecedented stability and scalability. Furthermore, by providing virtualized guests, new guests are created faster as Red Hat® OpenShift® nodes and with higher flexibility compared to LPAR. A downside of z/VM is that the required skill level for beginners is high since the environment is non-standardized.
For management of z/VM guests and resources, consider IBM® Cloud Infrastructure Center.
Resource sharing
Resources can be shared among guests. This includes sharing of CPU, memory, storage, and network capacity. The environment can be administered in great detail because on all those levels adjustments can be made.
Resources can also be adjusted to guests and made dedicated per guest.
Cluster HA/DR
z/VM provides many more options. Among them included features like the Live Guest Relocation (LGR) facility to move guests from one to another z/VM or facilities like GDPS. GDPS monitors cluster availability and in case of a DR, automatically starts the cluster on the DR resources.
