Creating bypass operation records

A bypass operation temporarily stops a component of a system, or stops the entire system. When you create a bypass operation record, you describe the reasons for the bypass operation, and include the actions to take for that bypass operation. You also secure the approvals and reviews for the bypass operation.

Before you begin

Before you create a bypass operation record, do the following tasks:
  • In the People application, authorize qualified personnel to review, and approve bypass operations.
  • In the Organizations application, set the Bypass Management option that requires that only an authorized person can review or approve bypass operations.
  • In the Standard Actions or Standard Action Groups applications, develop a set of actions that apply to each type of bypass operation. Identify the persons or person groups who are to do the actions.
  • In the Risk Assessment application, identify the hazards that are involved in completing the work that is associated with a bypass operation, and assess their risks. You also identify the precautions to take for each hazard.

About this task

In addition to creating bypass operation records from the Bypass Management application, you can associate bypass operation records with other applications, such as the Work Order Tracking application.

Safety-critical systems or components of those systems are isolated to allow work to be carried out without endangering personnel. Procedures are followed to isolate a safety-critical system before an authorized person can work on it. For example, you can specify that an alarm system is shut down. When the work is complete, the alarm system is turned back on and verified to ensure that the system is restored to full operation.

Procedure

  1. In the Bypass Management application, click New Bypass.
Use the rich text editor of the Long Description field to assign a color and a font size to the text.
  2. On the Bypass tab, specify details such as the location or the asset, the permit or isolation certificate, the safety-critical element, and the reasons for the bypass operation.
  3. Review the hazards that are associated with the bypass operation, and the precautions that need to be taken to mitigate the hazards.
  4. Specify the checklist of actions that are to be taken for the bypass operation, and who is to do the actions.
  5. Specify any related records, such as work orders or tickets.
  6. Identify the reviewers and approvers of the bypass operation.
  7. Add any relevant notes to the logs.
  8. Save the record.
