Swimlanes and milestones

Swimlanes and milestones visually organize the activities in your process in rows and columns.

Diagram with three swimlanes

Swimlanes

The person or group who performs the activity is called a participant. Swimlanes group the activities by participants, so by the role or group that performs that activity. Swimlanes are represented with rows.

When you drag an activity to a different swimlane, the participant associated with the activity is updated to match the participant of the new swimlane.

To add a new swimlane, click Add swimlane.

You can also specify an activity participant in the details. To do so, complete the following steps:
  1. Right-click the activity.
  2. Select Edit details.
  3. In the Participant section, type the name of the participant.
Note: You can specify an activity participant that is not associated with an existing swimlane. If you do so, a new swimlane is created automatically and the activity is placed in that swimlane.

Milestones

Milestones are columns which group activities into significant phases in the process. A milestone includes all the elements across all swimlanes that are located within its boundaries.

Like other elements in a process blueprint, milestones can have inputs and outputs, business owners, experts and other properties. They can include attachments, documentation, problems, and can be linked to policies that your organization has defined.

To add a new milestone, click Add milestone .

To move elements between milestones, drag and drop the elements across the diagram.
