Determining the virtual Ethernet switch name and mode in the destination server

Determine the name and mode of the virtual Ethernet switches in the destination server by using the Hardware Management Console (HMC).

To determine the name and mode of the virtual Ethernet switches, complete the following steps:

  1. Determine the name and mode of the virtual Ethernet switches on the source server:
    1. In the navigation pane, expand Systems Management, click Servers and select the source server on which the mobile partition is located.
    2. In the Tasks menu, click Configuration > Virtual resources > Virtual Network Management.
    3. Record the name and mode of each virtual Ethernet switch from the VSwitch area.
  2. Determine the name and mode of the virtual Ethernet switches on the destination server:
    1. In the navigation pane, expand Systems Management, click Servers and select the destination server to which you are moving the mobile partition.
    2. In the Tasks menu, click Configuration > Virtual resources > Virtual Network Management.
    3. Record the name and mode of each virtual Ethernet switch from the VSwitch area.
Compare the name and mode of the virtual Ethernet switches in the source server from step 1 with the name and mode of the virtual Ethernet switches in the destination server from step 2. The results of the comparison can be one of the following:
  • If the name and mode are identical, the mobile partition can be successfully moved from the source server to the destination server.
  • If the switch does not exist on the destination server, a switch with the same name and mode is automatically created in the destination server during the migration process.
  • If a switch with the same name and different mode exists in the destination server, a warning message is displayed.
