Removing and replacing the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD media device with the system power on by using AIX diagnostics

If you are running the AIX® operating system, use AIX diagnostics to remove and replace a media device with the power on.

To remove and replace a media device with the system or logical partition powered on, complete the following steps from the system or partition that controls the media device:

  1. Identify the system that you will be working on by using the identify the system process to turn on the system locate (blue) indicator. For more information, see Enabling enclosure indicators and Control panel LEDs.
  2. Complete the prerequisite tasks. For instructions, see Before you begin.
  3. If you are removing the media device as part of another procedure, continue to the next step. If you are removing the device because of a system failure, see Identifying a part.
  4. Remove the front cover from the system. For instructions, see Removing the front cover from the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD.
  5. Ensure that the media is unmounted in the AIX system, and if needed, remove the media from the device.
  6. Log in as root user or as celogin-.
  7. At the command line, type diag and press Enter.
  8. From the Function Selection menu, select Task Selection and press Enter.
  9. Select Hot Plug Task and press Enter.
  10. Select SCSI and SCSI RAID Hot Plug Manager and press Enter.
  11. Select Replace/Remove a Device Attached to an SCSI Hot Swap Enclosure Device and press Enter.
  12. Select the media device that needs to be removed. A window is displayed asking you to remove or replace the device.
  13. Complete the following steps to remove the Slimline media device as shown in the following figure:
    1. Press down the orange lever (A) found at the top of the Slimline media device.
    2. While keeping the orange lever (A), grasp the Slimline media device (or filler) (B) and slide it out of the enclosure

  14. If you are not replacing the drive, skip to step 16.
  15. Find the package that contains the new media device and remove it from the static-protective package.
    Attention:
    • Attach a wrist strap to an unpainted metal surface of your hardware to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) from damaging your hardware.
    • When using a wrist strap, follow all electrical safety procedures. A wrist strap is for static control. It does not increase or decrease your risk of receiving electric shock when using or working on electrical equipment.
    • If you do not have a wrist strap, just prior to removing the product from ESD packaging and installing or replacing hardware, touch an unpainted metal surface of the system for a minimum of 5 seconds.
  16. Align the replacement device with the media bay, and then press it fully into the system.
  17. Press Enter to allow the AIX operating system to accept the changes.
  18. Press F3 or Esc+3 to go back to the previous menu.
  19. Select Configure Added/Replaced Devices to configure the media device on the AIX operating system, and press Enter.
  20. Select List Hot Swap Enclosure Devices to confirm that the replaced media device has been listed.
  21. Press Esc+3 to go back to the previous menu or press Esc+0 to exit AIX diagnostics.
  22. Verify that the new media devices is operational. For instructions, see Verifying the installed part.
  23. Replace the system unit front cover. For instructions, see Installing the front cover on the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD.
  24. Close the front rack door.
