Creating a group definition
You can use the Manage Group Members panel to create a group definition.
About this task
For details on source and target data set parameters, refer to Source volume definition parameters and Target volume definition parameters.
Procedure
Complete the following steps to create a new group definition.
-
Enter the CREATE command (or CR) on the
Manage Group Members panel and press Enter.
The first Define zDMF Group panel is displayed. See Figure 1
Figure 1. Define zDMF Group - naming the group
- On the first Define zDMF Group panel, enter a name for the group. Enter a 1- to 8-character name by which this group is known after it is promoted. The group name must not start with numeric characters.
- Delete Existing Target Data Sets: Enter Y if you want to delete existing target data sets; N is the default. For details, refer to Source volume definition parameters.
- Early Data Set Completion: Y automatically diverts and completes unallocated data sets when the group enters Mirror state. D drops any data set that is currently allocated unconditionally from the migration. W keeps the migration in Mirror state if data sets are in use. If participating systems are not part of the owning LPARs sysplex/GRSplex/MIMplex, and Y, D, or W is requested, activation fails. For more information, see Source volume definition parameters. Y is selected by default when you create the group. See Configuring user session options to change the default.
- Data Set Allocation Sequence: Specify D for DATASET, S for SIZE, or N for NONE. N is selected by default. For details, refer to Source volume definition parameters.
-
Enter the NEXT command (or NE) and press
Enter.
The second Define zDMF Group panel is displayed. See Figure 2.
Figure 2. Define zDMF Group - defining source data sets
-
Enter the relevant group/pair parameters, as described in Source volume definition parameters.
The group/pair parameters are used to set options for a pair of data sets. A pair of data sets is a set of source and target data sets or masks - all of which have the same options and volumes. Use the Define zDMF Group panel to define a pair. After you are done, you can define additional pairs that are part of the same group.
-
Enter the relevant group/pair parameters, as described in Source volume definition parameters.
-
Enter the NEXT command (or NE) and press
Enter.
If you selected Y for the Build Data Set Exclude List parameter, the following panel displays. Enter the Data Set Exclude Mask as described in Source volume definition parameters, then enter the NEXT command (or NE) and press Enter.

-
The third Define zDMF Group panel is displayed.
See Figure 4.
Figure 4. Define zDMF Group panel - defining target data sets
- Specify the Target Data Set(s) and Volume(s) parameters, as described in Target volume definition parameters.
- After you enter all of the relevant group/pair parameters for the new group definition, enter the BUILD command (or BU), and then press Enter.
-
The new group definition’s configuration information is displayed on the fourth
Define zDMF Group panel.
See Figure 5.

-
Use the primary commands to create more pairs for this group, or edit, save,
verify, and promote the newly created group; see Table 1.
Note: If you entered the MOre command to create another group definition, the current definition is not saved yet. You cannot use the PRevious command to go back to the previous panel. However, you can use the Edit command if you to want to make changes to the group.
-
Verify the configuration and if valid, enter SAVE (or
SA), and then press Enter.
You are prompted to specify a member name. See Figure 6.
Figure 6. Create Member Name panel
-
Enter a member name from 1 to 6 characters long and press
Enter.
The member name is prefixed with ZD. If the member name is already used, you are prompted to enter another name.Tip: Specify a member name that you can easily identify as belonging to the group that you are defining.
The new group definition is listed (in alphanumeric order) in the Manage Group Members panel (see Figure 1).

Use the primary commands to create more pairs for this group, or edit, save,
verify, and promote the newly created group; see Table 1.
