Create activities for the Inception phase

The goal of this exercise is to create sample activities for the Inception > Inception Iteration [n] activity using the activities in the Inception Iteration capability pattern from Classic RUP.

About this task

Because we are only using a small subset of the activities included in the Inception iteration capability pattern, we chose to just copy those rather than copy the entire Inception Iteration capability pattern and delete the ones we do not want. You may choose otherwise, which we will demonstrate in the next step.

Procedure

  1. Make sure that the Configuration editor is still showing the classic_rup_for_teamy delivery process. In the Work Breakdown Structure, expand Classics RUP for Team Y >Inception. The editor panel should look similar to this:
inception phase for classic RUP for team y
  2. Change the current configuration to Classic RUP (for large projects). Do this by using the configuration selection menu.
  3. In the Configuration view panel, expand Processes > Capability Patterns > Classic RUP > Templates for Delivery Processes > Inception Iteration. You will see a much longer list of activities than we currently have for our new delivery process.
  4. Drag and drop the following activities from the Configuration view to the Inception Iteration [n] activity in the new delivery process :
    • Develop Initial Vision
    • Define the System
    • Perform Architectural Synthesis
    • Manage Iteration
    • Plan for Next Iteration
A small menu opens with the choices to Copy, Extend, or Deep Copy.
  5. Select Copy for each of the activities that you are adding to the delivery process.
  6. Rearrange the relative sequence of activities in the Inception Iteration [n]. To change the relative order of activities in the Work Breakdown Structure, right-click an activity and select Move Up or Move Down. For example, the Plan for Next Iteration activity should be the last on the list.
  7. Create an activity diagram for the new Inception Iteration [n] activity by right-clicking the activity name and selecting Open Activity Diagram. The diagram is pre-populated with activities from the Work Breakdown Structure. Refine the diagram so that it looks like the following. Do not spend too much time making the diagram look pretty. You can incrementally move elements by holding down the Control key and clicking the Up, Down, Left, and Right Arrows.
Attention: Engineering Method Composer does not automatically create synchronization bars. To get those, delete all links in the diagram and redraw. You can select multiple links at a time, right-click, and select Delete. The Fork Node and Join Node tools can be used to create the synchronization bars.

  8. Rename the Inception Iteration [n] activity to Inception Iteration, because we only plan to have one iteration in the inception phase. You can rename an activity directly in the WBS by double-clicking it and then changing it, or you can right-click the activity and select Show Properties View, and then change the name field in that view.
