Slimline media device for models 285, 52x, 55x, and 720

If you are going to install, or remove and replace a media device, review the guidelines in this section.

The following procedure describes the installation, removal, and replacement of the Slimline media devices. Before you begin the procedure, review the following Slimline media device guidelines.

Slimline media device guidelines

The following numbers correspond to the following figure Figure 1.

System p® servers have the following properties:

Slimline media-devices are not hot-pluggable.
The first Slimline media device must be plugged into media bay 2.
The media-device in bay 2 should be set as an IDE master.
Audio function is available only on the media device in bay 2.
Media bay 3 will accept a second, Slimline media device.
The media-device in bay 3 should be set as an IDE subordinate drive.

System i® servers have the following properties:

Slimline media-devices are not hot-pluggable.
One Slimline media-device can be placed in media bay 2.
Media bay 2 converts the IDE media device to SCSI device ID 1, using ACARD chip bus conversion.
If i5/OS® is your primary operating system, media bay 3 is not supported.
If Linux® or AIX 5L™ is your primary operating system, bay 3 can be used for a second media device.
The media-device in bay 3 should be set as an IDE master.
