Replacing a PCIe adapter in the 8408-44E or 8408-E8E system with the power turned on in Linux
To replace the Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) Express (PCIe) adapters in a Linux system or a Linux logical partition with the system power turned on, complete the steps in this procedure.
Procedure
- Ensure that you have the electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap attached. If not, attach it now.
- Ensure that the target slot is empty.
- If necessary, remove the adapter
from the antistatic package. Attention: Avoid touching the components and gold connectors on the adapter.
- Place
the adapter, component-side up, on a flat, antistatic surface. Note: Some PCIe adapters are shipped from the manufacturer with a blue handle or support bracket along the back edge of the adapter. To use adapters of this type, you must remove the blue handle or the support bracket from the adapter.Attention: A pin on the tailstock of the adapter resembles a removable screw. Do not remove this pin. It is required for correct alignment and seating.
- Enter drmgr on
the console to enable an adapter to be replaced.
For example, to replace the PCIe adapter in slot U7879.001.DQD014E-P1-C3 enter: drmgr -c pci -r -s locationcode
Follow the instructions on the display to complete the task.
- Return to the system.
- Carefully
grasp the adapter by its top edge or tailstock, and align the adapter with the slot and its
connector on the system backplane (A), as shown in Figure 1. Attention: Before you insert the adapter in the PCIe slot, ensure that the adapter has no cables, protective shields, or transceivers that are attached to it. If the adapter has cables, protective shields, or transceivers that are attached, remove them. For instructions to remove protective shields or transceivers, see Removing and replacing the tailstock on a PCIe adapter. The cables, protective shields, or transceivers must be attached to the adapter after the adapter is inserted in the PCIe slot.
- On the system, press the adapter firmly into its connector.
- Ensure that the tailstock notch engages with the pin on the system's chassis. See (B) in Figure 1.
- Close the I/O retention bracket (C) by
rotating it down and then tighten the captive thumbscrew (D) until
it is secured to the system's chassis. See Figure 1. Figure 1. Installing or replacing a PCIe adapter in the 8408-44E or 8408-E8E system

- If you replaced the PCIe adapter as part of another service procedure, return to that procedure.
