Changing hardware for one or more consoles
Learn how to change multiple hardware consoles, such as moving two or more adapters, while the logical partition and managed system remain powered on.
Before you begin
This procedure requires a workstation other than the current console device to make a console change. If you do not have another workstation available, you must shut down the IBM® i logical partition.
You must also use the Hardware Management Console (HMC) to install, add, or remove the console resource unless you plan to power off the managed system. If you must power off the managed system, complete the steps in the Changing the console by powering off the managed system topic.
Before you begin, plan to deallocate the LAN adapter if you are not using a local console on a network (LAN) configuration, even as a backup, or if you are not using the service tools server. After the LAN adapter is deallocated, you can move it or use it for another purpose. You must also use a workstation other than a local console on a network (LAN) because the steps to deallocate the adapter can cause the console to disconnect.
To deallocate the LAN adapter that is associated with a local console on a network (LAN), use the system service tools (SST).
- Access service tools by using SST.
- Select Work with service tools user IDs and devices.
- Select Configure service tools LAN adapter.
- Press F6 to clear the old values, and then F7 to store the new values.
- Press F3 to exit.
