If you are planning a deployment of Maximo 188.8.131.52 on top of WebSphere 8 you will discover that the installation engine has changed from previous versions of WebSphere and that the downloadable files required to properly construct an installation source have also changed in their format and number of files required. No longer do you download platform specific installation archives - you simply download a set of "core" and "supplemental" files that are cross-platform and then download your platform specific installation engine. This makes it simpler and more efficient when you are working in a multi-platform environment.
First and foremost you should you reference this URL which provides detailed instructions on how to obtain the files from the IBM Passport Advantage website:
From that page you can drill down to your target operating system and then download the OS appropriate files.
You will need to download the following three components for a successful installation:
1. The "IBM Installation Manager" of the current version for your specific platform. This is the actual installation program that you will run to perform the setup of WebSphere 8. For example, if your platform is AIX your part number would be CZM8SML.zip? and the description for this file is "IBM Installation Manager for AIX PowerPC (required to Install WebSphere Application Server V8.0), Multilingual"
2. The 4 zip files that make up the "core" of WebSphere 8. These 4 files have a description of "IBM WebSphere Application Server V8.0 (1 of 4) for Multiplatforms, Multilingual?" and are actually cross platform so you will only need to download this set of 4 files once even if you are going to install WebSphere onto multiple platforms. The 4 part numbers for these are: CZM9HML?, CZM9IML?, CZM9JML?, and CZVG3ML
3. The 4 zip files that make up the "supplements" of WebSphere 8. These 4 files have a description of "IBM WebSphere Application Server V8.0 Supplements (1 of 4) for Multiplatforms, Multilingual?" and are also cross platform like the "core" files that I mentioned above. The 4 part numbers you will need are: CZM91ML, CZM94ML, CZM95ML, CZXR9ML?.
To perform the actual installation simply extract the Installation Manager into it's own directory structure and then extract the other 8 zip files into a common directory structure. The Installation Manager will let you create a "Repository" which is the directory structure that you created from the extraction of the 8 cross platform zip files. Simply point the Installation Manager to this directory and let it install.
A nice feature of the Installation Manager is that it will check for updates so FixPacks can automatically be downloaded and applied via the Installation Manager instead of needing to download and install the WebSphere UpdateInstaller and it's .pak files manually.
Once installed the administration and deployment process is identical to WebSphere 7 from a Maximo perspective.
