Pinned topic Using IBM BPM 7.5/7.5.1 and 8.0 on the same system ??

‏2012-10-06T06:54:36Z |
Hi Guys,

I wanted to use 7.5/7.5.1 and 8.0 on the same system . But when i try installing 8.0 after installing 7.5, the installation fails because of the existing DB2 or because of the existing "bpmadmin" user that is created during a successful installation .

Is it possible somehow to use 7.5/7.5.1 and 8.0 alltogether on the same system ??

Yes, but you will have to hand manage your DB user/schema creation since the "typical" install assumes that it is installing DB2 for you and creating all the items. You will need to do a custom install.

    Possible yes, recommended... no.

If you're doing this for your own personal setup for development/lab/prototyping fun, then sure go ahead. If you plan on having multiple running at the same time on the same machine, then you're in for some messy configuration changes to ensure there isn't port conflicts and Installation Manager conflicts (depending on how you install); this is painful and definitely not recommended for any type of client install.

Additionally, if you have your source database installed on this machine also, then make sure it is setup properly to handle multiple instances/schema's per installation. You might not necessarily need to execute a custom install IF you're not running everything at the same time; you can just specify the database user/schema that you have pre-setup for each installation.

For instance, I have 7.2, 7.5.1, and 8.0 on my personal machine and they all use a local Oracle DB. The Oracle DB has something like 8 separate tablespaces to host all the necessary schemas for each of the product versions. Each tablespace has a user associated with it that I supplied as part of the install.

Thanks guys. Let's say i have installed 7.5 alongwith embedded DB2 and now if i install 8.0 using an existing database ( DB2 installed with 7.5), will it allow me to go ahead or 7.5 embedded DB2 will conflict with 8.0 installation ??

Right. Basically you would want to follow the custom install route, where you say you are using DB2, but you would have to use the DB2 admin tools to create all the users that are needed for the 8.0 instance, which by my count is either 5 or 8 depending on if you are installing standard or advanced.

So, you have to jump through some DB2 hoops to make it all work, but if you do that it should not be prevented. Note that custom install requires you to walk through a bunch more screens than "typical" since "typical" is laying down the DB and configuring it for you, while in "custom" they will need you to provide the details for all the different DB connections that are needed.

    Thanks Andrew.

Even if we use Typical installation, we do get options for choccing among "install embedded DB2" or "use an existing DB". will it work if i choose to use existinf DB2 instance created during 7.5 installtion ??

if Not, then what all users do i need to create if i'm having an advanced installation. ??

    Thanks,

That should work. IBM does spend time and money actually documenting these scenarios -
