Pinned topic FREE online DB2 Express-C book

‏2007-11-19T14:48:50Z |

Hello everyone!

If you've attended any of my speeches or courses/workshops as part of the DB2 on Campus program, I'd like to let you know that we've recently released a new FREE book about DB2 Express-C 9 based on the materials from these speeches/courses. The book also comes with a downloadable file you can use to work on the exercises/labs that come with the book.

To download the book go to the home page of DB2 Express-C:
www.ibm.com/db2/express

From there, there is a link on the right side that says:
FREE Book: Getting Started with DB2 Express-C

The book is for DB2 9, but we are working to update it to DB2 9.5 soon, and we are planning to add more application development topics too. This book is a good start for people who are new to DB2, and it provides you with some hands-on exercises.

I'm also looking for volunteers to translate this book to your own language! If you are interested, please let me know by replying to this post.
Please help us promote this FREE book!

Cheers!

    Hello Raul,

I am prepared to translate your book into German. I have acted as IT instructor with the Royal Air Force (United Kingdom) in the past, instructing officers, squadrons and civil personnel. Since I am a native German speaker and IT specialist the translation will conform to the high IBM standards.

The zip file containing the samples seems to be corrupt!

With no further news, I remain,

    Yours

    Hello Leo,

That's great!. Once I'm done with the update to DB2 9.5 by the end of December, I'll contact you again.
So far I have 2 volunteers for Spanish, 1 for Portuguese, 2 for Chinese, 1 for Bulgarian, 1 for Vietnamese, and 1 for German (you)

I just tried downloading the file coming with the book, and I see the corruption problem. I will notify the person who uploaded it to fix it. Thanks for letting us know.

    Hi,
    first of all excellent book!

On page 25 (2.3.1 character DB2 Connect) there is a picture for "System z". Just to note on System z there are 4 operating systems available that can DB2 be installed on:
    • z/OS,
    • VSE,
    • VM and
    • zLinux.

DB2 for VSE and DB2 for VM are actually one product DB2 for VM/VSE something like DB2 for Linux, Unix, Windows (DB2 LUW)

About connect: Connect is required to connect from DB2 LUW to DB2 on:
    • z/OS,
    • VSE,
    • VM,
    but NOT! for zLinux.

In our company we use DB2 LUW on Intel/Windows and also DB2 for VSE on System z and DB2 for zLinux on System z.

Just pointing this out that there are more than one operating system on System z, just to get the whole DB2 Connect picture.

    Hope this helps,

    Hi Raul,

Some time ago I downloaded DB2 Express 9.7 and after a few false starts managed to get it installed and running on my Linux box (Centos 5.5). Trying to get a connection to the database is another story though, one I haven't reached the end of yet.

I downloaded your excellent book hoping it would solve the problem, but alas no. Here is the problem: for security reasons I don't want any GUI software on the server. All the literature I've read, including the 'Getting Started' book, assumes a GUI is available. At least that's the impression I've taken from skimming through the book looking for a way to connect to the database.

For example, I've got PostgreSQL running on the same Linux server, and I can administer it using the open source utility phpPgAdmin that's installed on the server but accessible via HTTP on a client Windows PC. Is there anything comparable available for DB2 Express 9.7, or how does one remotely administer DB2 running on a server that doesn't have a GUI installed?

Perhaps this topic could be covered in the next version of 'Getting Started'.

    Regards,

    MJR

    Hi MJR,

You can install DB2 on a server without including the GUI tools. Then from a client you can remotely administer it using GUI tools. On the server, the "DAS" (DB2 Administration Server) must be running in order for you to administer remotely with GUI tools.

If you don't want GUI at all (not even in your client), you can use the "attach" command from the client to perform instance-level operations, and "connect to" statements to connect to the database and perform database-level operations.

Moreover we recently released "lite" images of DB2 Express-C that do not include the GUI tools.

    Hope this helps,
