The economics of mobile application testing
The year 2011 seems to be when a lot of companies are motivated to extend their business applications to support mobile devices. I get asked about how IBM Rational supports mobile application development at least once a day (usually more often than that!). As new smart phones and tablets are projected to become the "client of choice" for internet access ( ZDNet: As Microsoft's monopoly crumbles, its mobile future is crucial ), business application support for them will only intensify in... Worldwide mobile device sales have skyrocketed. Key drivers of this explosion may include the desire for smart phones with instant access to numerous cool applications at your finger tips and the growth of the Android™ mobile operating system from Google. The popularity of the smart phone can be attributed in large part to software—the invisible thread that enables today’s innovations. It is software, together with systems engineering, that enables what we call a “system of systems”—the ability of software-intensive subsystems such as radio and... [More]

Mobile World Congress 2012 The Mobile World Congress 2012 event wrapped up in glittering style. If you missed it, you can catch up by viewing some of the videos on the Mobile World Live TV web site. Most of the major players – Google, Microsoft, Facebook, IBM – had significant presence. It probably should not have been surprising that Apple was not at the conference. Always the contrarian, they waited until the week after MWC to announce an update to the iPad . But there were lots of new devices and models announced during the conference... [More]

I think that it is a clear understatement to say that "Mobile was hot!" at the Innovate 2012 conference last week. Beginning with the conference opening keynote from IBM Senior Vice President Robert LeBlanc, and continuing right through to the very last session on Smarter Planet Android development by Beery Holstein, the mobile software development topic came up constantly. The Mobile Track presentation sessions were delivered to rooms bursting at the seams . And the special "Question of the Day" contest, developed... [More]
We chose the name "Innovate" for our annual conference because it's focused on the development and delivery of software. And software innovation is where the competitive opportunities lie these days. But creating software is no easy task. Whether it's targeted for IT applications or embedded products, software creation remains a complicated challenge. What should IT and product & systems teams be thinking about these days, as they try to improve their capabilities in software development and delivery? Here are my five top... [More]
The world has officially gone mobile. It has done so in ways that we could not even have conceived of only a few years ago. Today, there are more smartphones and tablets sold than all of the PCs in the world put together , and in certain countries mobile devices have replaced cash . They have created a vibrant app economy with almost 500,000 new jobs. And a mobile startup goes from zero to a one billion valuation in less than two years.
Mobile development has not been confined to just the individual or consumer market. It has also been a... [More]
The IBM Software Technical Summit in China, which was held earlier last month in Beijing, was heavily geared toward the IT practitioners. This was easily observed from the participant demographics. At the conference, I was more likely to run into a young IT professional wearing casual outfits than a business suit. I admit, the choice of clothing was partly due to the artistic DNA of this city, which is the cultural center of China and nurtures more musicians than any other place in the country. But the point is, if you are an IT practitioner... [More]

Because of all the innovations that software has brought us, everyone expects access to data anywhere, at anytime. This “anywhere, anytime” expectation is not limited to consumers. Software developers increasingly expect to build and deliver within a wider array of environments that embrace individuals, distributed teams and communities, and can include crowdsourcing, outsourcing, the cloud, and whatever is next on the horizon.
Today’s Fall Product Launch for IT solutions is designed to help IT... [More]
Can you believe it? The powerful, tiny device most of us have in our purses or pockets is really just a few years old. Of course we know that, but it’s amazing how quickly the mobile smart phone has expanded beyond its consumer roots to capture the imagination of businesses of every type. And how quickly businesses have seized opportunities to create what Geoffrey Moore calls “systems of engagement,” enhancing their corporate backbones with new mobile applications to support the modern enterprise.
For enterprise IT organizations, the focus... [More]
