IBM Pulse 2014 , the Premier Cloud Conference, held at MGM Grand Las Vegas from February 23 rd -26 th , delivered an incredible experience. More than 11,000 attendees from across the globe, including over 400 IBM Systems and Storage clients and partners, came to discover how to use cloud as a growth engine for business. Forbes Magazine recently published the article “ Software That Tells You What It Needs ” by Roger Kay that describes the evolution of virtualization and the emergence of software-defined environments as a gateway to the future . As I read “ Software That Tells You What It Needs ” three reasons became apparent why your software should tell you what it needs, and why you might want to listen.
Increase responsiveness and agility: To keep pace with the rapidly changing business environment driven by social business , mobile and big data requires software applications to define the resources needed, and for the infrastructure to respond quickly. The Forbes article uses a couple of application examples to describe why clients need to evolve IT infrastructures beyond basic virtualization . Roger discusses the importance of a business critical application as fraud detection identifying a sudden spike in activity, which should drive an immediate reallocation of storage resources to capture and track fraud related data. Container technologies are not a new concept; it has been around for a while. In this blog, I will take a closer look at Linux based containers like LXC and Docker , which are gaining momentum in the fast changing cloud landscape. Docker is built on open source container capabilities and encapsulates the application which runs in its own isolated process on the host operating system, a great feature for people concerned with cloud security. This has a potential for disruptive innovation in the cloud as it is very different from a traditional VM based model enabling acceleration of continuous delivery process and application isolation solutions.
Now, let’s compare this work docker which is a light weight , quick provisioing alternative without the need for a hyper visor . As the containers share the OS image, we can run lot more applications on the server , also giving ability to snap shot the OS into a common image when combined with IBM patterns technology. Either case, container technologies seem to be a good bet for applications that need speed and light wight application deployment in an isolated container.
It is important to note that, there is no guest operating system or a hyper visor in this model, and makes it a good fit for light weight applications , which needs to run on low resources , on edge nodes etc . Recently, IBM's Richard Goldgar, Client Architect, blogged on Thoughtsoncloud.com to offer top ten tips for CIOs looking to move to the cloud. Let’s take a look at the tips he suggested that could help CIOs better succeed in their cloud efforts:
Stop being religious
According to Richard, cloud is about making things “fast, anywhere, now” (he calls this as FAN), while saving costs and simplifying IT. Richard suggests cloud should help us broaden, not narrow, our horizons while we keeping in mind our existing architecture and IT goals.
