How to map your network by geography

Technical Blog Post

Abstract

How to map your network by geography

Body

In the first version of what was then Riversoft, and is now IBM Tivoli Network Manager V4.2, you could choose, if I recall correctly, a purple map of the world to be the background for the equivalent of the Network Views.

But the devices didn't go in the correct places - they were just overlaid on the image.

Technology has moved on in the intervening years, and now, with V4.2 Fixpack 2 of Network Manager, geographical mapping is supported in the GA product. A previous version of this feature was available as a technology preview.

  • You can configure your discovery to pick up existing device location information, or enrich the discovery with existing device location information.
  • Then you can create and display a Network View which shows the devices in their proper location. You'll need to ensure you have the right licenses first.
  • And to keep the view manageable, there are several scoping and filtering options available.

Looking good!

To try out the feature, update Network Manager to Fixpack 2 (on Fix Central), and see the instructions: https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSSHRK_4.2.0/itnm/ip/wip/disco/task/nmip_dsc_configuringgeographicaldiscovery.html
