What is IBM Service Management Unite (SMU)
SMU/Zowe integration scenarios
Starting from SMU Version 1.1.5, SMU is integrated with Zowe to modernize the automation and monitoring on IBM Z.
View JES job information
When users select a job on SMU dashboard, SMU calls Zowe API to get the job information, such as job instance, job files, etc. And then display the job in a new page. SMU also embeds the Content Viewer of Zowe JES Explorer, to display file content.
View MVS data set information
When users select a data set on SMU dashboard, SMU calls Zowe API to get the data set information, such as data set members. And then display the data set in a new page. SMU also embeds the Content Editor of Zowe MVS Explorer, to view/edit data set content.
Access SMU from Zowe desktop
SMU provides a plug-in for Zowe desktop. With the plug-in, user can quickly and easily access SMU on Zowe desktop where other common tools are available.
How does SMU integrate with Zowe
As the figure below shows, SMU server gets job/data set information through Zowe REST API, and then wraps the job/data set into CURI dataset. The CURI dataset can then be displayed on SMU dashboard with a tree widget.
SMU also embeds part of Zowe Explorer Web Client (Zowe JES Explorer and MVS Explorer) to display the content of job files or data set members.
Zowe helps to accelerate and simplify problem resolution in SMU
By integrating with Zowe JES Explorer, Operators and Developers can view any job content and job output in SMU dashboard, without the need to switch the application or use a separate terminal emulator while looking at a problem reported by SMU automation or monitoring.
Similarly, by integrating with Zowe MVS Explorer, Operators and Automation Administrators can drill-down in context, or directly navigate to most relevant datasets while isolating a problem, without the need to switch to another tool, type in text, or search for the dataset.
Integration into Zowe not only saves additional time, but also improves the quality of work for seasoned SMEs and fresh-out Mainframe Operators and Developers.
Vision of future Zowe exploitation
SMU will continue ito integrate with Zowe in below aspects in future releases:
API Mediation Layer provides a single point of access for mainframe services. Putting SMU behind API Mediation Layer is the foundation for other in-depth integration of SMU and Zowe.
Zowe desktop is a central place for your Z/OS applications. By enabling SMU to communicate with other application, you can leverage other applications on Zowe desktop for problem resolution. For example, when you select an LPAR in SMU, a 3270 application can be opened for you on Zowe desktop connected to the specified LPAR.
By integrating with Zowe SSO, when users access SMU from Zowe desktop, login can be performed automatically, users do not need to manually login to SMU.
