Right tool for the job: Selecting the correct ITCAM for Transactions monitoring agent

A number of clients/ sales teams recently asked me to provide a best practice for "end-to-end" monitoring. They then proceed to provide a detailed list of their application environment, with the expectation of a "deployment list" of where all the ITCAM for Transactions agents should be deployed.
Nobody will disagree with the fact that ITCAM for Transactions has a large number of agents. This is due to the fact that application performance monitoring (APM) is a complex topic with many facets. A simple strategy might be to "deploy all agents", but this rarely is the best strategy. In 2011, I gave a talk (link) at Tivoli Pulse (Australia/New Zealand) where APM Maturity is covered. This model provides a good guideline as to what monitoring is most needed, dependent on the current situation.
