Welcome to the Application Performance Management Blog, where you can read the perspectives from APM experts. This Blog provides insights into the Application Performance Management solution, as well as technical details about specific IBM products.
Obtain the agent installer file apm_base_agents_aix_22.214.171.124.tar from passport advantage and copy to your APM server for pre-configuration (as described here [insert previous blog URL]) and then copy the configured package to your agent installer system, expand using GNU tar tool. The GNU tar is available from AIX Toolbox for Linux Applications or alternatively upgrade to the latest version of AIX to receive the code fix for handling file names longer than 100 characters (as needed for this tar file).
In terms of hardware, 1GB disk space is needed with memory size of 200 MB plus 10 MB per VDA or DDC monitored is required per agent. A 2 core 64bit CPU is minimum.
For HMC Base agent ensure that AIX version 6.1 with TL08 or higher is installed to pass the pre-req checker by the agent installer script.
To monitor VIO servers and lpar resources a HMC v8R126.96.36.199 or higher required since the REST service is supported. The agent can also be configured with HMC v7R188.8.131.52 or lower with limited monitoring to only LPARs CPU and Memory.
Install the HMC base APM agent:
Run installAPMAgents.sh script to install the agent for HMC Base. This script will be in the directory that is named for the archived file and version (APM_AIX_Agent_Install_184.108.40.206)
Configure the agent:
Once the base agent is installed there are two important tasks to complete before starting to configure the agent:
Set up SSH connection between the system that is running the agent and the HMC. For more information, see Setting up the SSH connection here.
Prepare corresponding version of SDK for your HMC before starting the first agent instance. Further information on this step is also available on IBM Knowledge Center here.
The following video will go through prerequisite steps taken to prepare a HMC based APM agent instance.
Configure the HMC instance and set APM utilisation for monitoring:
Once completed above procedures, configure the HMC agent instance with hmc_base-agent.sh script and apply additional steps to gather data from your virtual I/O servers.
Set your HMC console server to monitor VIO server.
Enable CPU and memory utilisation data collection.
The following video will go through the configuration of HMC agent instance with additional procedures to monitor a HMC V8R8.2.0 system that’s managing IBM Power-7 and Power-6 managed systems.
To find out which version of HMC agent has been installed run /path_to_install_dir/bin/cinfo then option 1. APM v220.127.116.11.0 comes with Monitoring Agent for HMC Base Version: 06.22.10.00
We found the following troubleshooting during configuration which could cause issues to successfully complete the configurations:
Ensure the HMC user used has a valid minimum viewer privileges and password assigned.
The REST API service running slow, then restart the HMC console server to restart the REST service.
The APM dashboard is showing “data provider error” and greyed out agent, then ensure that the monitoring agent instant status for the HMC base is running from the installed AIX lpar.
