Innovation in Mobile Cognitive Computing: The Next Frontier

Hi Everyone,

Mobile has already changed the world, and the next frontier is innovation in mobile cognitive computing. Advances in robotics and artificial intelligence will be the next game changer in computing. Personally, I love the idea, as the human capacity for digesting and processing information is limited. A machine that can understand, learn and retain every piece of data it already knows about a subject is incredibly powerful.

Streamlined Life Processes

Imagine all of the things innovation in mobile cognitive computing might change. Health diagnoses could be issued by a computer system that takes into account an infinite number of previous patients’ diagnoses, perhaps spotting empirical trends that a human could not. Perhaps cognitive computing could be applied to public transport using a machine that understands how the population moves in any given moment, and how to route the public transport system accordingly. Imagine a world in which the crowds leaving England’s winning Rugby World Cup game arrive home within an hour after the match instead of being slowed by delayed, overcrowded trains. (I did say imagine, as I expect only half of that scenario will manifest in the near future!) No matter how it is applied, cognitive computing will soon change everything for us.

Change Everywhere

If there is one thing we love, it’s mobile. We love our devices; we look at them more than anything else and carry them everywhere. With cloud computing becoming more widely available on mobile platforms, our devices are also becoming more powerful. Software has been giving automated responses with the illusion that our devices were giving us real-time information, when in fact the response was often prerecorded; that model will soon be left in the dust. Cognitive computing is fundamentally different, the new era will be carried right into the palms of our hands via our mobile devices. Mobile cognitive computing will help make every experience personalized to our needs. Right now, advertisements are tailored, which is just the beginning.

An Ideal Marriage

The marriage of cognitive computing and mobile will be very interesting indeed! I can see a world where we have our own cloud-based cognitive device that knows us and can interact with other ‘cogs’ to provide us with everything we need. It will learn about our behavior, our health, our hobbies and interests – and provide us with all that we need to make our lives incredible.

I understand that this is some way off. But if we can’t dream, what’s the point?
