About fix pack and prerequisites

Problems addressed in this fix pack

The fixes addressed in V7.5.1 Fix Pack 2 are explained in the Fix List for Business Process Manager products and WebSphere Enterprise Service Bus document.

Fix pack prerequisites

To use this fix pack, you must have one of have the following versions of IBM Business Process Manager Express, IBM Business Process Manager Standard, IBM Business Process Manager Advanced, or IBM Business Process Manager Advanced - Process Server installed:

  • 7.5.0.0
  • 7.5.0.1
  • 7.5.1.0
  • 7.5.1.1

You must also have the following levels for WebSphere Application Server and its feature packs installed or must install the following levels of WebSphere Application Server and its feature packs during the upgrade process:
  • WebSphere Application Server V7.0.0 Fix Pack 31
  • WebSphere Application Server V7 Feature Pack for XML V1.0.0 Fix Pack 15
  • WebSphere Application Server V7 Feature Pack for Service Component Architecture (SCA) V1.0.1 Fix Pack 17 (IBM Business Process Manager Advanced only)

These downloads are available through the Required fixes for IBM Business Process Management V7.5.1 Fix Pack 2 products document.

If you already have the WebSphere Application Server Version 7.0 Feature Packs installed, you still must have the repositories available and open when you are installing 7.5.1 Fix Pack 2. If you do not have them available, you will receive errors about not being able to synchronize the product installations.

The feature pack repository that is available must be at the same fix level as the feature pack that you have already installed. If you have already installed WebSphere Application Server Feature Pack for SCA Version 1.0.1 Fix Pack 17, for example, that repository must be available during the installation.

Hardware and software prerequisites for IBM Business Process Manager Express, IBM Business Process Manager Standard, IBM Business Process Manager Advanced, and IBM Business Process Manager Advanced - Process Server are available on the web on their respective Hardware and Software Support pages.

Space requirement:

Before you start the update, check the free space in your system and temporary directory.
The following table lists the default installation locations. It also lists the approximate additional space that is used after installing the product fix pack and the required WebSphere Application Server fix pack and feature packs.

Actual space requirement depends on the version that you are upgrading from, and does not include additional temporary space you may need if you are downloading and extracting the fix pack images on local drives.

Steps for performing a rolling upgrade

The Process Center and online Process Server cannot connect if the versions do not match. If the Process Server version is later than the Process Center version, you can use the Process Server in the offline mode only. For example, if the Process Server is upgraded to V7.5.1 Fix Pack 2, it can no longer be an online Process Server in Process Center if Process Center is still at V7.5.0 Fix Pack 1. You can deploy new snapshots to the higher-level Process Server using the offline server mode. With this approach, you create a deployment package at the Process Center and install it manually on the Process Server. If the Process Center version is higher than the Process Server version, you will not be able to deploy any applications to the Process Server in offline or in online mode.

You can roll out maintenance incrementally in an IBM Business Process Manager installation that consists of a Process Center and multiple Process Servers. This approach allows for the continued running of production applications during the upgrade and regression test period.

To perform a rolling upgrade, first upgrade the Process Servers and then upgrade the IBM Process Center and tools.

Note: You can complete a rolling upgrade only when you are applying fix packs, refresh packs, or interim fixes. You cannot use a rolling upgrade for migrating between major releases.

Note: In the preceding graphic, PS refers to the Process Server and PC refers to the Process Center.

Assuming that you have a test environment, a staging environment, and an offline production server, complete the following steps:
  1. Upgrade your test environment.
  2. Test your applications in the new environment and make sure that they work as expected.
  3. Upgrade your staging Process Server environment.
  4. Test your applications in the new environment and make sure that they work as expected.
  5. Upgrade your production Process Server.
  6. Upgrade the Process Center. The Process Center maintains a full version history of all the process applications, and there is no opportunity for new function capability to be introduced before the entire topology has been upgraded.
  7. Reconnect any servers that should be online.
  8. Make sure that everything works as expected.

Important: Check for the recommended interim fixes for V7.5.1 Fix Pack 2 in IBM Fix Central.

Installing the fix pack

Steps for backing up your existing Installation Manager environment

Back up the Installation Manager directories where the data will be changed during the upgrade process. Refer to Backing up IBM Installation Manager agent data and shared files for recovery.

Upgrade instructions for installations with existing profiles

If you have created profiles in the existing Business Process Manager installation, additional steps are required before you start upgrading the fix pack. These steps include backing up the profile, stopping all Java™ processes, and sequencing the upgrade. Before you continue with the fix pack installation, see the Profile upgrade instructions for IBM Business Process Manager V7.5.1 Fix Pack 2 (7.5.1.2) product installations with existing profiles document for details on these steps. Return to this document, when instructed, to complete the Version 7.5.1 Fix Pack 2 installation. Also, if you installed the product using the Typical installation, a profile was created and you must follow these steps.

Installing V7.5.1 Fix Pack 2 (7.5.1.2)

If you have existing profiles under this installation, before you continue with the fix pack installation, see the Profile upgrade instructions for IBM Business Process Manager V7.5.1 Fix Pack 2 (7.5.1.2) product installations with existing profiles document for details on the steps to follow for the various topologies. Return to this document, when instructed, to complete the Version 7.5.1 Fix Pack 2 installation.

If you have installed IBM Process Designer 7.5.0.0, 7.5.0 Fix Pack 1, 7.5.1.0, or 7.5.1 Fix Pack 1, you must update your IBM Process Designer environment separately to V7.5.1 Fix Pack 2. For more information, see the Update Instructions for IBM Process Designer V7.5.1 Fix Packs document.

Download repositories to the local system

The IBM Installation Manager must be at a minimum level of Version 1.5.2 before you start IBM Business Process Manager 7.5.1 Fix Pack 2 installation updates. The IBM Installation Manager detects an available update if you are connected to the Internet on the workstation on which you are planning to complete the IBM Business Process Manager 7.5.1 Fix Pack 2 update activities. WebSphere Application Server V7.0.0 Fix Pack 11 and later is available in an Installation Manager format. WebSphere Application Server V7.0.0 Fix Pack 31 is a prerequisite to the IBM Business Process Manager Express, IBM Business Process Manager Standard, IBM Business Process Manager Advanced, or IBM Business Process Manager Advanced - Process Server V7.5.1 Fix Pack 2.

If the machine on which you have installed the product has Internet access, skip the following steps.
  1. If the Installation Manager is lower than Version 1.5.2, download the latest copy of the Installation Manager from the IBM Installation Manager download site.

  2. Download the appropriate V7.5.1 Fix Pack 2 from the IBM Business Process Manager products download site. The product installation packages are described in this dW Answers set. Download the package to a temporary disk location.
