Abstract
This Alert is meant to inform you about an issue where all project areas are deleted after upgrading from a 4.0.x release of IBM Rational Requirements Composer (RRC) or Rational DOORS Next Generation (RDNG) to 5.0 or higher.

Symptoms
- Projects areas are no longer available after upgrading although the upgrade appears to have completed successfully
- A query directly to the PROCESS_AREA table in the migrated database also yields no results.
Cause
The problem can be caused by any of the following:
- A previously failed execution of the rm_upgrade script, specifically the finalizeApplicationMigration command.
- Manually running the repotools-jts -finalizeApplicationMigration command using the RM Application ID.
- Running the finalizeApplicationMigration command more than once against the same database
- Running the rm_upgrade script more than once since the rm_upgrade script triggers the finalizeApplicationMigration command.
- The command has been run without the -newJTSHome parameter. In this case, the migration completes without error however the repotools-jts -finalizeApplicationMigration command is not executed.
Impact
This issue will impact all RRC or RDNG installations that are upgrading from release 4.0.x to release 5.0 or higher.
Defect
Reported as a defect in APAR PI33689. Further details are available in defect work item 343736 and work item 344348.
Workaround
If you have not yet upgraded, you can avoid this issue by applying IBM Rational Collaborative Lifecycle Management (CLM) 5.0.2 iFix003 or greater before starting the migration. The iFix can and should be applied before migration and before the application is started for the first time.
Corrective action
If you have already upgraded and ran the rm_upgrade script, revert the IBM Rational DOORS Next Generation database to a state before the rm_upgrade script failure and re-run the upgrade script.
Diagnosis
Execute the following query against the cloned RDNG database to confirm this problem is applicable to your situation. If there are no results, the project areas have been removed by the upgrade process.
- For Oracle
SELECT DISTINCT NAME FROM PROCESS_PROCESS_AREA
- For other databases:
SELECT UNIQUE NAME FROM PROCESS.PROCESS_AREA
