Question & Answer

Question

PTF listing for 4096 disk sector support at 7.2 and 7.3 with D/TD840 or D/T6B4E-050 drives.

Cause

This document provides a link for IBM i performance considerations and a listing of PTFs for V7R2M0 IBM i 4096 disk sector support issues related to disk drive types: D/TD840 or D/T6B4E-050.

Answer

Note: For IBM i performance considerations, refer to the following link:https://www.ibm.com/blogs/systems/ibm-performance-faq-essential-resource-ibm/

Drive types can be verified via either of the following options:
a) WRKDSKSTS OUTPUT(*PRINT) can be used to verify that drive type is D840, but will NOT show the model for 6B4E. Use DSPHDWRSC to confirm 6B4E-050.
b) DSPHDWRSC TYPE(*STG) OUTPUT(*PRINT) can be used to verify 6B4E-050 device type and model.

o How the application workload and operating system are using temporary disk storage can play a significant role.  As such, IBM also suggests all PTFs related to temporary storage be applied as per this document:  http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=nas8N1017368

o In addition to the fixes, TR8 also provides the following enhancement:

March 2018 - IBM i 7.3 Technology Refresh 4 and IBM i 7.2 Technology Refresh 8 Unmap for IBM FlashSystems configurations.

With IBM i 7.3 TR 4 and IBM i 7.2 TR 8, configurations natively attaching IBM FlashSystems 900 will be able to take advantage of the Unmap function. Unmap helps manage disk utilization and may help performance for both disk initialization and run-time.  There is no special action required to activate this support -- merely loading and applying the Technology Refresh PTF Group will result in the function taking effect.

Note: In the case of failed mirrored load source migrations for units with different sector sizes, mirror units of the source load source must be in the missing status before performing the copy and replacing of the existing unit after the copy completes for the mirror unit.
