This is Cloud
on a Smarter Planet.

Many organizations experience the cloud as a scalable, cost-efficient way to increase storage and security, improve efficiency and reduce infrastructure stress. Some smarter enterprises are doing more than that. They’re using cloud solutions for innovation: as a platform to help them discover new opportunities and new revenue streams as they build new products, serve new customers, and see the world in a new way.

For a decade, cloud solutions have been celebrated as a technology that lets a business streamline its infrastructure. But we’re only beginning to see the cloud’s greater power to foster radical changes. It can help a smarter enterprise innovate and discover entirely new products, new services, new markets and new revenue streams.

The floating marketplace.

The University of Bari in Italy partnered with IBM to implement a cloud-computing solution for the local fishing industry. Real-time data and a virtual fish market now help fishermen manage and control inventory, while maximizing work efficiency and cost savings. As a result, time to market has decreased 70 percent—and the fishermen’s income has increased 25 percent.

Monitoring by mobile.

Cloud solutions can also help you discover new business opportunities that may not have seemed apparent. A produce company in Zurich called Blattwerk decided to deliver fresh fruits and vegetables directly to its customers with a fleet of food trucks. To do that, it needed to monitor its food’s freshness and distribution by linking its mobile point-of-sale scanners with its supply chain. Building this complex system in the cloud helped the company get its trucks to customers just three months after it hatched the idea.

There's no question cloud computing can change the way your business does business. The greater question is how the cloud can change the way a business sees business: not just expanding audiences, but expanding opportunity.

Can you risk less by reinventing more?
Can you risk less by reinventing more?

Until recently, an organization’s ambitions to innovate were restricted by its ability to build a platform powerful enough to support those ambitions. The cloud has changed that. An enterprise that connects its infrastructure to the cloud can now focus on testing, adjusting and deploying new ideas—and uncovering new lines of business, and new customers, that had never seemed attainable.

Discovering new markets

An IT provider that once built its custom software systems exclusively for large and medium-sized hotels shifted its technology to a public cloud platform. In doing so, the company found it could also enter the market for smaller hotels that couldn’t previously afford its software. Another software developer, which analyzes individuals’ facial expressions to tell marketers how their customers really feel, once could only sell its software directly to retailers. The developer now uses the cloud to give its customers easier and less expensive access to its technology and analytics—and to reach new customers and markets.

Cloud technology is no longer primarily a tool for your company’s efficiency, optimization, storage and security. It’s a tool to help you become an incubator of ideas—and to reach customers that once seemed out of range.
