Energy Australia and IBM have united for a large-scale smart network implementation. A key project within EnergyAustralia's overall intelligent network program involves the roll-out of 12,000 sensing devices throughout the electricity distribution network, creating a smart grid. The project will enable EnergyAustralia to deliver energy more efficiently and reliably, and allow a greater number and range of environmental solutions to be integrated into the electricity network such as renewable energy.

In the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) GridWise Olympic Peninsula Project (US), intelligent devices (such as thermostats) in consumers' homes were tied to the PNNL system, which automatically controlled power consumption based on pricing signals and customer preference. Consumers were able to decrease their electricity bills by an average of 10 percent.
