IBM hires Julie Saxon as Chief Revenue Officer of The Weather Company and IBM Watson Advertising

By Sheri Bachstein

The media and advertising industries are undergoing a major transformation. In the midst of this change, we have been putting our AI technology to work for the open web – sharing our tech and insights with brands, agencies, content owners, and advertising technology partners to help drive stronger results while creating better consumer experiences.

To accelerate our growth, I’m excited to announce today that industry veteran Julie Saxon has joined The Weather Company and IBM Watson Advertising in the newly created position of Chief Revenue Officer.

Julie brings more than two decades of experience in sales, sales management, digital marketing, partnerships, and programmatic advertising to IBM. As a key member of The Weather Company and IBM Watson Advertising leadership team, Saxon will bring her extensive experience in both media and tech, developing first class talent and transforming sales organizations.

She will report directly to me and will oversee revenue growth for both the consumer and B2B businesses, including The Weather Channel digital properties, subscriptions, advertising, broadcast media and partner channels.  She adds further strength to our largely female leadership team that includes our CMO Randi Stipes, CTO Wendy Frazier and now Julie Saxon as CRO.

Julie’s combined B2C and B2B experience, along with her impressive industry tenure and reputation, couldn’t be better matched with our approach and ambition. She joins IBM from Yahoo! (formerly Verizon Media), where she was vice president, group director, managing multiple sales teams across the East, South and Midwest regions. Prior to Yahoo!, she served as sales director at AudienceScience where she was responsible for leading revenue across all verticals for both the data management platform and network. She has also held sales leadership roles at MySpace, Fox Interactive Media and Yahoo.

“I have been watching what IBM and The Weather Company have been doing for years. They were among the first to apply advanced AI to the digital ad industry while becoming one of the strongest and most consistent consumer brands online,” said Julie Saxon.  “Having spent my entire career in tech and media – and looking at the challenges facing our industry today and the organizations best equipped to lead the market – the decision to join was a no brainer. I am very excited to work with this extremely talented team.”

As the industry confronts impending growth headwinds, The Weather Company and IBM Watson Advertising are working on innovative ways for privacy-forward, advanced technology to help brands identify and reach new customers, deepen existing customer relationships, and drive increased performance.  AI can help predict actions and outcomes based on data signals, and today, this technology is helping drive the IBM Weather consumer business as well as the offerings in the IBM Watson Advertising portfolio.
