We offer various internships from Business to Technology, from HR to Software Development and many more opportunities to kick-start your year in industry. You’ll work on real projects, all whilst being supported to gain as much as possible from the experience.

12 Month University
Placements

We offer 12-month University Placement opportunities in Business, Finance, Human Resources, Technology, Marketing, Software Development and Design. Whichever role you choose, you’ll gain the experience, skills and contacts you need to help us solve some of our client’s toughest challenges. In return, we’ll give you everything you need to build the career you want, including fantastic support, training and development and a competitive salary. Our University Placement Scheme is for those in their penultimate year of their Undergraduate degree looking for a year in industry. Roles open periodically over the academic year for up to 1 week at a time. We close these once we have hit capacity.

Our hiring process runs in sprints – this means we aim to complete the ‘Initial Application to Assessment Centre’ stages of the process within a 4-week period.

Salaries start at £18,000 pro rated per annum.

Design

The best thing – you can make your mark on the business world and focus on the commercial side of IBM. What you’ll do – anything from analysing our business, creating proposals for potential clients or even doing research into different areas of the market.

  • To begin with you should be interested in taking a year out as part of your degree and to be on target for at least a 2:1 in your honours degree.
  • You must also be in your penultimate year of study and be authorised to work in the UK for the whole placement too.
  • Whilst you don’t need a specific degree background to apply, you do need to be enthusiastic, with plenty of energy and passion for the areas of our business that you’re applying for. Never fear, if you haven’t studied business or IT, we’re all about the person, not about their background.
  • University Placements are for a minimum of 1 year and must form part of your degree - normally prior to the final year of study.

What you’ll do – web design, problem diagnosis, database development, technical project management… there’s loads to get involved in. Whatever role you take, you’re likely to be designing, implementing and maintaining technical solutions for our clients.

  • You must also be in your penultimate year of study and be authorised to work in the UK for the whole placement too.

What you’ll do – your role could involve advertising, market research, organising events, managing websites, creating newsletters or working with our suppliers on the design, print and production of new promotional materials.

What you’ll do – you’ll be involved in creating and supporting initiatives and policies that help us attract the right people, and develop and motivate them once they’re working for us – so, anything from resource management, business development, to recruitment, employee well-being or diversity.

  • To begin with you should be interested in taking a year out as part of your degree and to be on target for at least a 2:1 in your honours degree.
  • You must also be in your penultimate year of study and be authorised to work in the UK for the whole placement too.

Software Development

Location: Hursley (Winchester)
Salary: £18,000
Entry Requirements: Must be on track for a 2:1 in any degree discipline

What you’ll do – you’ll get involved in virtually every stage of either developing new solutions or supporting and improving existing ones.

The majority of our interns will be based in IBM Hursley, near Winchester, the largest software lab in Europe. This location will give you exposure to a wide selection of projects and services and will enable you to gain a once in a lifetime experience.

We do have 1-2 roles in our other software labs including Manchester, Milton Keynes and Southbank, but please be aware 90% of the placement roles will be in IBM Hursley in Hampshire. Please ensure you are happy with this location prior to applying.

We will place you within a team where you will be working alongside developers, engineers who will be there to support and encourage and inspire you during your placement, During your 12 months we will encourage you to join in various projects (outside of your day job), hackathons, etc, this will help to build your network as well as your skills and experience during your internship.

What we look for:

  • Real passion for coding and programming

University Placement
application process

Before you apply, please ensure you are on track for a 2:1 or above (in any degree discipline) and are looking to take a year out from University during the penultimate year of your undergraduate degree.

We welcome applications from candidates of all nationalities, but there may be some restrictions if you cannot demonstrate that you have your own right to work within the UK. You should check you meet the criteria for people looking to work in the UK before you submit your application online. The process is quick, we don’t want you waiting around. Our aim is to get you from online application to assessment centre in just four weeks. Our schemes close quickly so make sure you register your interest above, and once you have applied, check your emails regularly to see what stage of the process you are at.

This stage will take approximately 5 minutes. Simply fill in your personal details and upload your CV to receive a confirmation of application.

This stage will take approximately 20 minutes and is a Cognify Game Based Test, an exciting series of interactive games that measure your problem-solving skills and numerical reasoning.

This stage will take approximately 2 hours. You will be sent an online application form where we ask some competency-based questions as well as your personal statement.

This stage will take approximately half a day. You will participate in group activities to demonstrate your logic and discussion skills as well as having a face to face interview with a manager. Top Tips for the Assessment Centre - be yourself, be prepared and do your research into IBM.

This stage will take approximately 1 hour. This interview is specific to a role you have been matched to. It’s a chance for you to find out more about a role, demonstrate you have done your research and have some understanding of what we do. Should you be successful at this stage we will then proceed to offer.

Extreme Blue –
12 Week Summer
Internship

There are internships, and then there’s Extreme Blue.

Think of it as the opportunity to unleash your technical ingenuity and business acumen in the professional world working on internal and external projects - with the support, expertise and backing of one of the world's leading technology companies. Extreme Blue at IBM isn’t your average internship. It’s a race against time - with the 12 week timeline compelling you to prove your creativity, passion and knowledge to deliver some of the most innovative solutions to real life business challenges. You will work in a team of 4 to develop an idea to address a real-world challenge confronting part of IBM's business – and then turn that idea into a real product. When the 12 weeks are up, you’ll showcase it to our executives, business partners and clients. Each year 16 students join us on Extreme Blue, in 12 Technology roles, and 4 Design roles.

Technology Internship

All candidates must be in their penultimate year of study at university – please note, all roles and assessment centres will be based in IBM Hursley. You must be able to complete the whole 12 week program starting in June and finishing in September 2020.

As a technical student, this internship will give you the opportunity to work on an innovative technology project from an outside client or for an internal client. You'll build on your existing IT skills and learn new ones as well and teach others. Your role as one of the technical interns in a team of 4 will be to build, develop and improve an IT-based solution that meets the customers' needs. You will have the chance to work with leading edge technologies, be mentored by leading IT professionals and learn new technologies, craft new applications or put a modern twist on an existing tool/idea.
You will find out how IBM and the IT industry work, how IT can contribute too or be used for the good of the community and also learn how to manage real customer projects.
You'll need to utilise your technical curiosity to design, architect, develop and test your product among your technical peers, while never losing sight of your customers and the end goal.

Design Internship

All candidates must be in their penultimate year of study at university – please note, all roles and assessment centres will be based in IBM Hursley. You must be able to complete the whole 12 week program starting in June and finishing in September 2020.

As a designer, you'll be teamed up with developer interns in a team of 4 to create a solution to a real-world problem, with an assigned client. When the 12 weeks are up, you'll showcase your working product to our executives, business partners and clients. Design a solution that addresses a client brief - you could even get a patent out of it!

Have the freedom to work on a project with no constraints – we want you to be creative, and to push yourself and your team to come up with new ideas.

Extreme Blue application
process

During the application process we will assess you on eight core competencies. Think about whether, and how, you can demonstrate them.
Adaptability; Communication; Client Focus; Creative Problem Solving; Drive; Teamwork; Passion for IBM and Taking Ownership.

IBM’s online testing will include a Cognitive Ability Game, to assess your problem solving skills, and a Learning Agility Assessment, which looks at your way of learning.

Assessments will be timed.

The application form will focus on competency based questions and will ask you to provide a personal statement.

A Manager will review your application form.

IBM Assessment Centres will typically require candidates to complete two group exercises, one being based on logical reasoning and the other being on based on discussion.

Candidates will also complete an individual interview where they will show a pre-prepared presentation. All Extreme Blue assessment centres are held in IBM Hursley, Winchester.

Assessments will be timed.
