Test Policies, Practices and Preparation

Test Policies

A violation of IBM testing policy may result in the revocation of certification and suspension from the IBM Professional Certification Program. The content of each IBM exam is the property of IBM Corporation. The test content is proprietary and confidential and may not be reproduced or disclosed.

Test Practices

  • You must always conduct yourself in a civil manner when at the testing location.
  • While testing, you may not talk to other candidates or refer to their screen.
  • You may not reproduce or disclose any test content, in any manner, to anyone.
  • You may not alter any documents provided to you during the certification process. This includes the score report and certification certificate.
  • When preparing to take a test, you may not utilize any unauthorized study guides or other materials containing actual test questions or answers. If it is determined that you have used actual test questions or answers in your preparation, you are in violation of the testing policy.
  • You must take tests independently, and may not use written notes, published materials, testing aids, or any unauthorized material during the test.

Non-Independent Test Taking is a testing violation with serious consequences for violators. Refer to the NITT: Non-Independant Test Taking section of this document for more information.

Discretionary Actions

The IBM Professional Certification Program Policies and Testing Practices are important for the certification program and address issues that directly affect the integrity of IBM certification. IBM takes non-compliance very seriously.

The IBM Professional Certification Program, in its sole discretion, may:

  • invalidate any exam
  • revoke any IBM certification
  • suspend testing or ban anyone from future testing

IBM Test Retake Policy

After an individual has successfully passed an exam, the retake policy does not allow the same exam to be taken again.

If a certification exam is not completed successfully on the first attempt, there is no waiting requirement before taking the test a second time. However, candidates may not take the same test more than twice within any 30-day period.

The costs associated for retaking an exam is the full regular exam price.

A test result found to be in violation of the retake policy will not be processed, which will result in no credit awarded for the test taken. Repeat violators will be banned from participation in the IBM Professional Certification Program.

Test Content - Non-Disclosure Policy

Proper security of test content is a critical aspect for maintaining a reputable certification. Standard best practices for high-stakes certification testing includes the protection of all test content. The IBM test policy follows these practices. IBM test content is proprietary, confidential and copywrite material of IBM Corporation. IBM does not provide exam questions in any format other than in a proctored test environment. Further, IBM does not disclose answers to certification test questions.

Similarly, answers to test questions used in diagnostic assessment tests may not be disclosed as well. Given that diagnostic assessment tests are provided as a tool to aid in preparing for certification testing, consistent policies are followed for both types of tests.

Test Prices

The test pricing structure of the IBM Professional Certification Program is set worldwide with a standard price per test. Pricing is discounted in countries the World Bank has designated to be in a lower economic category. The prices are updated annually on January 1st of each year.

Special Accommodations

In partnership with our test delivery provider (Pearson VUE), it is our policy to offer special testing accommodations in conformance with established standards:

You can manage this yourself by visiting the IBM ID Website , in the Profile tab, modify the “email address” section. We recommend that the same email is used when enrolling at Pearson VUE or if changes have occurred after a certification is issued, that you also update your profile with Pearson VUE.

Certification Exam Preparation and Registration

To prepare for your certification exam, it is important to start by reviewing the certification description to:

  • Study the overview and objectives.
  • Evaluate how closely your knowledge and skills are aligned to the information provided.
  • Review the exam preparation information.
  • Plan your studies

You may decide you are already prepared to take the required exam(s) based on previous education, experience, and/or your current job skills. However, to make the most of your expertise and testing experience, it is highly recommended you take advantage of these preparation resources.

Exam Objectives

The exam objective information describes the topics to be covered for each section of the exam. The objectives also indicate the emphasis placed on each topic by showing the percentage of the exam that is dedicated to the section. The actual objectives are listed as specific tasks & knowledge-areas included in each section. The exam questions are based on these objectives.

Exam Registration

A Pearson VUE account, valid for IBM testing, is necessary for exam registration. If you have not already established one, the first step is to create a specific account for IBM testing at Pearson VUE.

Pearson VUE will email detailed instructions for taking your exam. The email will include directions, process, and policies. Be sure you read the complete email and understand the information provided.

Non-Independant Test Taking (NIIT)

NITT is when a test taker receives assistance, (either from other individuals or physical materials), that is not a standard and acceptable type of assistance available for all who take the test. And, as a result of that specific type of assistance, the responses provided by the test taker during the exam, are not necessarily their own.

Non-Independent Test Taking (NITT) is a breach of IBM Test Security and is a serious violation of IBM Professional Certification Testing Practices

One critical outcome of NITT is the test results received are meaningless. The purpose of certification testing is to assess the knowledge and skills of the individual person who registered to take the test. When a test is not taken independently it has no value.

Interesting points about NITT:

  • Using any type of assistance does not ensure success.
  • A test taker may fail the test (even with assistance provided).
  • If caught, the consequences are severe.

The types of activities often thought of as an example of NITT is a test taker who:

  • secretly takes written notes (or other documentation) into the testing location, with the intention to
  • use them when taking the test.
  • looks at another test-taker’s answers during the testing session.
  • communicates with another person to get answers when they take the test.

People often refer to these activities as: Cheating. All methods of Non-independent testing are equally serious. It does not matter when the assistance occurs. If testing is not independent it is a NITT violation. An Example: An excellent example of NITT activities outside of the testing session is: Using study material with the certification exam test questions.

An Example of Non-Independent Test Taking (NITT):

Use of study material containing questions from the actual certification exam. Everyone who uses certification test questions to prepare for an exam, compromise their ability to test independently.

The reality is that just by reviewing actual test questions, in advance of an exam, it is impossible for the test taker to respond spontaneously, based on independent thought. (This is NITT.) Further, the assistance & unfair advantage provided, is based on advanced knowledge of proprietary information.

All IBM Professional Certification test questions are IBM confidential, copyrighted, and are the property of IBM. So, the violations actually go beyond policy and also become a legal concern, as well. The implications become more & more serious. Still, there are some web sites offering "study guides & exam preparatory materials" considered to be fraudulent, because they are really illegally acquired, certification test questions.

And although the "guides & materials" (that include the actual certification test questions) are illegal, unauthorized, and unreliable, they are passed around openly on the internet (on websites & blogs), and from person-to-person in discussion groups, etc.

To safeguard your on-going certification status, you should carefully consider test questions provided as study material**. Look for indicators to suggest the material may be the certification exam test questions. Any one of the following may be an indicator that you might want to consider:

  • Are many IBM tests, for distinctly different product areas, listed on the site?
  • Are most IT companies, also, included on the site?
  • What does the site indicate about the tests?
    • Are there claims the questions are the same as the certification exam?
    • Any guarantees of passing the exam?
  • Are actual educational study materials provided as a study guide?
  • What have your peers told you?
  • What comments do others make about the test (in person or on the web)?

It is to your advantage to avoid study materials that may contain the actual certification questions presented on IBM certification exams. IBM has data forensics that can detect results based on a candidate’s prior access to certification exam questions.

**The only study materials which contain questions, that can be considered 100% assured of being authorized by IBM, are those listed on or pointed to from www.ibm.com/certify

Detecting Non-Independent Test Taking

IBM (and many IT certification programs) has devised methods to detect the use of resources containing IBM certification test questions. Through complex data forensics, we can identify a NITT violation. The forensic analysis is based on a variety of factors and different elements of the testing results. (IBM does not rely on any single piece of data.)

It is important that in addition to a standard review of the overall test results, there are multiple aspects of response patterns that are analyzed. The psychometrics of the test performance is evaluated. And IBM also includes independent statistical analysis in making the determination. Based on this rigorous evaluation, IBM can make the NITT decision with certainty and with an unchallengeable degree of confidence.

IBM takes notification of NITT very seriously. A notice is sent only when the conclusion is unmistakable.

By sending a violation notice, IBM has determined, undoubtedly, the testing candidate had access to the test questions (and used the questions) to prepare for the exam. The status of Pass or Fail does not matter. Also, it is not relevant whether the use of questions, from the certification exam, was intentional (or unintentional). In all cases, the fact is the test-taker had reviewed the questions from the certification exam, prior to taking the test.

NITT: Any circumstances when an exam is not taken independent of all external influence or assistance.

If you have taken an IBM certification exam, and it is determined you did NOT test independently:

  • Your certification (if issued) will be revoked, resulting in the loss of your certified status.
  • You will be banned from testing and will not be allowed to take any IBM test.

All NITT restrictions are included in the Testing Practices section. NOTE: NITT violations can occur: before, during, and after Testing. Each type of violation is enforced by IBM.

Before Testing Do Not:

  1. Use any unauthorized study material that includes actual certification test questions
  2. Have someone else take the exam for you

During Testing Do Not:

  1. Talk to other’s who are testing, or look at their screen
  2. Use written notes, published materials, testing aids, or unauthorized material

After Testing Do Not:

  1. Disclose any test content
  2. Reproduce the test
  3. Take any action that would result in assisting or an unfair advantage to others

Everyone should review and understand the Test Policies, Preparation and Practices section.

What is Non-Independent Test Taking (NITT)

NITT is when a test taker receives assistance, (either from other individuals or physical materials), that is not a standard and acceptable type of assistance available for all who take the test. And, as a result of that specific type of assistance, the responses provided by the test taker during the exam, are not necessarily their own.
