Watson assists astronauts on the ISS: an experiment
Space exploration has since always inspired many “firsts.” On behalf of the DLR Space Management and Airbus, we have helped develop the Crew Interactive MObile CompanioN (CIMON®)*. Our goal: to make him the first recognized and valued crew member aboard the ISS with the help of Watson’s artificial intelligence.
First movers pave the way. Here are some that did so for project CIMON®.

The path from the lab to the stars has not been an easy one. Read about CIMON®’s fascinating journey – and keep up with his next steps...

Entry One: Project Spaceball
The space companion started out as a round sphere of plastic. There wasn’t much to him in the beginning — not even a name — so the engineers on the team just called him “spaceball.”

Entry Two: From Insurance to Space
Before he launched crew assistant’s space journey, Matthias Biniok was busy putting Watson technology through its paces on Earth.

Entry Three: Sensing Vs. Intuition
CIMON® was having a bit of an identity crisis before psychology student Sophie Richter-Mendau stepped in.

Entry Four: What do you mean?
Programming wunderkind Nina Fischer had seen some fascinating technological challenges in her career.
