Governing data to comply with regulations with Regulatory Accelerator
You can streamline the process of complying with data regulations by using the Regulatory Accelerator service. The Regulatory Accelerator service is powered by machine learning for speed and efficiency, and reduces the hassle of complying with new regulations by reducing the amount of manual effort that is required to comply.
Service This service is not available by default. An administrator must install this service on the IBM® Cloud Pak for Data platform. To determine whether the service is installed, open the Services catalog and check whether the service is enabled.
Many businesses struggle to comply with increasingly strict data privacy regulations, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). To do business around the world, companies must comply with these regulations. And to comply with the regulations, businesses must process and interpret enormous volumes of text, and then implement changes based on their analysis.
Data privacy regulations are lengthy and complex, as this excerpt from the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) illustrates:
1798.101. (c) A business that sells consumers' personal information, or that discloses consumers' personal information for a business purpose, shall disclose, pursuant to subparagraph (C) of paragraph (5) of subdivision (a) of section 1798.104: (1) the category or categories of consumers' personal information it has sold; or if the business has not sold consumers' personal information, it shall disclose that fact; and (2) the category or categories of consumers' personal information it has disclosed for a business purpose; or if the business has not disclosed the consumers' personal information for a business purpose, it shall disclose that fact.
This excerpt is relatively simple. However, the excerpt is challenging for both computers and humans to comprehend because it requires an understanding of terms that are referenced in section 1798.104. A regulatory expert would need to read all the terms in the referenced sections and merge them with their existing domain knowledge. In addition to the referenced terms, the regulatory expert would need to account for implied terms, such as related terms and synonyms. In addition, the expert would need to identify terms such as rights, policy, and controls throughout the regulatory document.
To fully understand regulatory documents, companies must rely on experts who understand the contexts, policies, and rules specified in the document and the impact that they have on a business. Businesses spend billions of dollars annually to understand and comply with regulations.
The Regulatory Accelerator service combines natural language processing, which allows computers to analyze human language, and machine learning, which enables computers to learn from data. Regulatory Accelerator uses this combination to extract key terms, available definitions, policies, and controls from the regulatory taxonomy to interpret regulations.
As you map regulatory terms to your business terms and data assets, the embedded machine learning model fine-tunes the Regulatory Accelerator algorithms to suggest increasingly accurate matches. You can use the View report page to assess the state of your compliance and to identify areas that need further attention. By using the Regulatory Accelerator service, your manual effort for compliance is drastically reduced. You save time, money, and resources while reducing the risk of being out of compliance.
