Question & Answer
Question
How do I set up XDM (X Display Manager)?
Answer
XDM is an that manages a collection of X Displays with support for XDMCP.
To configure and run XDM:
1) Check to make sure that XDM is installed.
lslpp -l X11.apps.xdm
This file set is available on Volume 1 of your installation media.
2) If the machine that you will be running XDM on has a graphical console, skip to Step 3. If the machine does not have a graphical console, you will need to tell XDM not to start on the console.
- Edit the /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers file.
- Comment out the line that reads:
:0 local /usr/bin/X11/X -force
3) Configure XDM to start on boot:
/usr/lib/X11/xdm/xdmconf
*Note: /usr/lib/X11/xdm/xdmconf needs to be run in order for XDM to start successfully.
4) Start the XDM daemon:
startsrc -s xdm
If you have a graphical console, the XDM login should be displayed to your console at this point.
If you are running XDM for remote Xserver connections, you should be able to do an XDMCP Query to the machine running XDM and get a log in window.
