XCF connection INOP

Troubleshooting

Problem

The following message appears indicating that VTAM has detected an INOP for the specified device.  The completion code of X´0044´ in the sense code 80100044 indicates a soft INOP:
EZZ4310I ERROR: CODE=80100044 REPORTED ON DEVICE PWCDRM01. DIAGNOSTIC CODE: 00
The connection is inoperative but recovery of the connection is possible.

Cause

This problem is a result of an inadequate amount of XCF buffers and can cause the  unexpected XCF outages (INOPs).   XCF messages must be completed within the required time-out period.  The following display of the XCF major node shows that the PU is in INOP status:
DISPLAY NET,ID=ISTLSXCF,SCOPE=ALL
IST097I  DISPLAY  ACCEPTED
IST075I  NAME = ISTLSXCF         , TYPE = LCL SNA MAJ NODE
IST486I  STATUS= ACTIV     , DESIRED STATE= ACTIV
IST084I  NETWORK RESOURCES:
IST1316I  PU NAME = ISTPY1Q1  STATUS = IINOP---X-  TRLE = ISTTY1Q1
IST1500I  STATE TRACE = OFF
IST314I END
The display of XCF (D XCF,CD,CLASS=ALL) shows many NOBUFF conditions.
You will see VTAM messages similar to the following:

Resolving The Problem

For ISTXCF, the MAXMSG parameter for PATHIN and PATHOUT should be tuned to its upper limit value.  The higher value of MAXMSG parameter does not cause XCF to use more storage.  Therefore, you can raise the value of your MAXMSG parameter to resolve this problem.  For more information see Setting up the sysplex environment for VTAM and TCP/IP functions in the z/OS V2R1 Communication Server SNA Network Implementation Guide.

Also see sections Message Buffers and Calculating message buffer space -- An example in the z/OS V2R1 MVS Setting Up a Sysplex documentation.
