The wrong volume is in the drive error when installing Rational Suite

Troubleshooting

Problem

When attempting to install Rational Suite, you receive the error message: "The wrong volume is in the drive. Please insert volume xxxxxxxx into Drive x".

Symptom

Cause

The CD rom drive is not properly reading the installation CD. This can be caused by a defective, damaged, or dirty CD. It can also be caused by a defective CD rom drive. In rare instances, a good CD rom drive may not be able to read an installation CD that has been used successfully on other machines.

Resolving The Problem

First, confirm that the installation CD can be read by a CD rom drive on another machine. If the installation CD can be read by a CD rom drive on another machine, then configure that CD rom drive to be a shared drive and map a network drive on the problem machine to this CD rom drive. Then insert the CD into this CD rom drive, and cancel the autorun installation setup screen that subsequently appears. On the problem machine, select the newly created network CD rom drive in Windows Explorer and navigate to setup.exe and double click on it to start the installation process.

Another workaround is to copy the appropriate contents of the installation CD's to a network share drive and perform the installation using the network share as the source for the installation files. To use this method, identify a network share and insert the Rational Solutions for Windows Disk 1 into the CD rom drive on the network share machine, and cancel the autorun installation setup screen that subsequently appears. Open a command prompt and type the following command:

<location>\setup\rssetup.exe -Admin:<dir>

where "location" is the location of the Rational Solutions for Windows Disk 1 and "dir" is the target home directory. Please note that there is no space between Admin: and <dir>. Follow the subsequent instructions, making selections as appropriate until complete.

On the problem machine, map a network drive to the newly created network share in Windows Explorer and navigate to setup.exe and double click on it to start the installation process.
