Writers for *LAN 3812 DEVDs End Periodically with Message CPA403D

Troubleshooting

Problem

This document provides information on an issue where the writers for *LAN 3812 printer device descriptions end periodically with message CPA403D "Operator action required on device &4".

Resolving The Problem

This document provides information on an issue where the writers for *LAN 3812 printer device descriptions end periodically with message CPA403D - Operator action required on device &4. This most often occurs with *LAN 3812 PJL and *LAN 3812 SNMP printer device descriptions; however, it can also occur with other *LAN 3812 DEVDs, including *LAN 3812 LEXLINK DEVDs, *LAN 3812 IPP DEVDs, and *LAN 3812 DEVDs that use the LPR Print Driver (TSPLPRD) utility.

Technote documents N1019652 and N1019570 state the following information concerning message CPA403D:

CPA403D "Operator action required on device &4 (C R)"
This indicates that user intervention is requested on the printer (such as out of forms, paper jam, and so on). For the R410 operating system and above, change the printer device description so the Printer error message (PRTERRMSG) parameter is set to *INFO instead of *INQ. For the R370 the operating system, change the printer device description so the first User-Defined Options (USRDFNOPT) parameter is set to ERRMSGINFO.

Changing the PRTERRMSG from *INQ to *INFO will cause either message CPI404F "Problem with device &1" or message CPD337F "Remote device rejected an attempt by the writer to open a connection" to be issued as an informational message rather than of getting CPA403D as an inquiry message, depending on the version and PTF level on your system. Since you will no longer be getting an inquiry message whenever user intervention is requested on the printer, you will not have to answer a message operating system to get printing to continue once the error condition on the printer has been resolved. The writer will continue to contact the printer to reestablish a connection. This should prevent the printer from timing out and should allow the writer to continue printing where it left off when the printer is once again available.

To change one or more *LAN 3812 device descriptions to set the Printer error message (PRTERRMSG) parameter to *INFO, do the following:
1.Run the following Work with Writers (WRKWTR) command to work with all active writers:

WRKWTR WTR(*ALL) DSPFMT(*NORMAL) ASTLVL(*INTERMED)
2.Type Option 4 (End) next to each affected writer and press the Enter key, then press the F5 (Refresh) key until all of those writers have ended.
3.Run the following Work with Configuration Status (WRKCFGSTS) command to work with the configuration status of every *LAN printer device description on the system:

WRKCFGSTS CFGTYPE(*DEV) CFGD(*LANPRT)
4.Type Option 2 (Vary off) next to the printer device description for each affected writer and press the Enter key, then press the F5 (Refresh) key until all of those printer device descriptions have gone to VARIED OFF status.
5.Press the F14 (Work with devices) key from the Work with Configuration Status panel to get to bring up the Work with Device Descriptions panel so you can work with the device description for every *LAN printer device description on the system.
6.Take Option 2 (Change) next to the printer device description for each affected printer and press the Enter Key to prompt the Change Device Desc (Printer) (CHGDEVPRT) command. Set the Printer error message (PRTERRMSG) parameter to *INFO and press the Enter key, repeating for each affected printer device description.

Note: As an alternative, you can type Option 2 (Change) next to the printer device description for each affected writer, pressing the Page Up and Page Down keys as necessary, and then type "PRTERRMSG(*INFO)" on the parameter/command line at the bottom of the Work with Device Descriptions panel before pressing the Enter key. This will change all of the selected printer device descriptions to specify "PRTERRMSG(*INFO)" at the same time without prompting the Change Device Desc (Printer) (CHGDEVPRT) command for each individual printer device description.
7.Press the F12 (Cancel) key from the Work with Device Descriptions panel to get back to the Work with Configuration Status panel.
8.Type Option 1 (Vary on) next to the printer device description for each affected writer and press the Enter key, then press the F5 (Refresh) key until all of those printer device descriptions have gone to VARIED ON status.
9.Run the following Work with Writers (WRKWTR) command to work with all printer writers whether they are currently active or not:

WRKWTR WTR(*PRT) DSPFMT(*NORMAL) ASTLVL(*INTERMED)
10.Type Option 1 (Start) next to each affected writer to restart each writer job.
