IBM Support

"Workspace Unavailable" at start Rational Software Delivery Platform

Troubleshooting

Problem

Attempts to launch a Software Delivery Platform (SDP) result in "Workspace in use or cannot be created, choose a different one."

Symptom

This error occurs in Eclipse-based SPD products like IBM Rational Software Architect and IBM Rational Application Developer for WebSphere Software.

The full error message is as follows.

Workspace Unavailable

Workspace in use or cannot be created, choose a different one.

Cause

You see the error message when Eclisper detect ta .lock file in the workspace\.metadata directory.

There are three possible causes.

  • On a stand-alone workstation, the workbench stopped unexpectedly, for example by a termination of the eclipse.exe process.

  • Multiple user access the workspace from a network share at the same time.
This is an unsupported configuration SDP products. You can use a supported version control system for the workspace and project.

  • The workstation restarted from a sleeping or hibernated state.
In this case, the SDP product cannot maintain the state. To resolve this issue, disable hibernate or sleep mode or shutdown the product befoire you put the workstation to sleep or hibernation.

Resolving The Problem

Remove the stale .lock file.

  1. Navigate to your "locked" workspace

  2. Ensure that Windows Explorer is setup to show filename extensions
    1. Go to Tools > Folder Options.
    2. Select the View tab.
    3. Ensure that Hide extensions for known file types and Hide protected operation system files is unchecked.

  3. Open up the .metadata directory

  4. Close all applications that use javaw.exe.

  5. Terminate any remaining javaw.exe process.

  6. Delete the file named .lock

  7. Start the product in your usual workspace, and it should come up now.

If the start problems persist, your workspace might be corrupt. To correct, create a workspace and import your files into the new workspace.
