Troubleshooting
Problem
After either a new install or upgrade to Content Search Services (CSS) on Windows where CSS is configured to run as a service, the service will not start and throws an error 1064 in the startup status window and in the Windows Application Event Log.
Symptom
CSS does not start and the Windows Application Event Log does not state why, only throws an error code 1064.
Environment
This will only occur with CSS installed on Windows servers and where it is configured as a service.
Diagnosing The Problem
You find that the CSS Windows service doesn't start, and that the Windows Application Event Log reports a 1064 or similar error occurred.
Resolving The Problem
The main problem seen with running CSS as a Windows service is that it requires the user running the service to be a member of the Local Administrators Group. The first step after finding this problem happening is to go to their Windows Administrator and have the user account running the service added to that group, then retry starting the service.
In other instances, when the user was already a Local Administrator, some relief may be found by uninstalling and reinstalling the CSS software, which will completely recreate the service as part of that process, to see if that has any effect on the problem.
