Windows Encrypting File System (EFS) causes system instability during backup

Troubleshooting

Problem

If Windows Encrypting File System (EFS) is enabled during a Tivoli Storage Manager client backup, large temporary files may be created in the C:\Windows\Temp\ directory that can cause the system drive to fill up.

Symptom

Windows EFS enabled during a Tivoli Storage Manager client backup can lead to system instability or crashes if there is insufficient space. In the C:\Windows\Temp\ large files named efs###.tmp will be present.

Resolving The Problem

The temporary EFS .tmp files should be excluded from the Tivoli Storage Manager backup by adding the appropriate exclude statement to the dsm.opt options file. If problems persist Microsoft should be contacted for further assistance.
