IBM Spectrum Protect for Windows® Server and Storage Agent

Minimum Hardware and Software Requirements

Tip: The product now known as IBM Spectrum Protect™ was named IBM Tivoli® Storage Manager (TSM) in releases earlier than Version 7.1.3. To learn more about the rebranding transition, see http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21963634.
Note: This document describes system requirements for IBM Spectrum Protect 8.1.12 and earlier.  Links to system requirements for more recent IBM Spectrum Protect server levels can be found here.

Versions that have reached End of Support:
  • IBM Spectrum Protect 7.1
  • IBM Tivoli Storage Manager 6.3
  • IBM Tivoli Storage Manager 6.2
  • IBM Tivoli Storage Manager 6.1
  • IBM Tivoli Storage Manager 5.5

IBM Spectrum Protect Version 8.1
Minimum Hardware Requirements
Hardware
An AMD64 or Intel EMT-64 processor
Disk Space
The following minimum values for disk space:
  • At least 7.5 GB of free disk storage for a typical installation
  • 60 MB in the temporary directory space
  • 2 GB partition size in the C:\ drive
  • 300 MB in the instance directory
  • 2 GB for the shared resources area

Significant additional disk space is required for database and log files. The size of the database depends on the number of client files to be stored and the method by which the server manages them. The default active log space is 16 GB, the minimum that is needed for most workloads and configurations. When you create the active log, you need at least 64 GB in size to run replication. If replication and data deduplication are both being used, create an active log of 128 GB in size. Allocate at least three times the default active log space for the archive log (48 GB). Ensure that you have sufficient resources if you are using data deduplication or expect a heavy client workload.

You must format the disk device to have a disk sector size of 512 bytes.

For optimal performance and to facilitate I/O, specify at least two equally sized containers or Logical Unit Numbers (LUNs) for the database. In addition, each active log and archive log should have its own container or LUN.

Ensure that you see the capacity planning section for more details about disk space.

Memory
The following are the minimum system memory requirements for servers with databases up to 500 GB, with daily ingestion of no more than 200 GB per day:
  • 16 GB for standard server operations without data deduplication and node replication.
  • 24 GB for data deduplication or node replication.
  • 32 GB if you plan to use node replication with data deduplication.

For more specific memory requirements for larger databases and higher ingestion capability, see the IBM Spectrum Protect server memory tuning table.

For more specific memory requirements see the IBM Spectrum Protect Blueprint.

The Windows system functions, such as Device Manager, are supported on the 64-bit IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Console.

Normal Windows system functions are available for the 64-bit server using the Manage Computer function of the Windows system.

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Version 6.2 has reached End of Support (EOS)
Hardware
Intel® Pentium® compatible processor or multiprocessor-based computer.
Disk space
  • At least 3 GB of free disk storage (for a typical installation)
  • 200 MB temporary directory space
  • 2 GB partition size in the C:\ drive
  • 300 MB in the instance directory

Significant additional disk space is required for database and log files. The size of the database depends on the number of client files to be stored and
the method by which the server manages them. The default active log space is 16 GB, the minimum that is needed for most workloads and configurations. Allocate at least three times the active log space for the archive log (48 GB). Ensure that you have sufficient resources if you are using deduplication or expect a heavy client workload.

You must format the disk device to have a disk sector size of 512 bytes.

For optimal performance and to facilitate I/O, specify at least four separate directories or Logical Unit Numbers (LUNs) to be used by the database and
logs. This allows I/O to be balanced across multiple directories or mounts.
Memory
Recommended and minimum memory requirements and minimum space requirements to run:

64-bit Windows systems
Recommended memory:
  • 12 GB.
  • 16 GB if you are using deduplication.

Also consider:
· Large production servers may require more than the recommended amount of memory.
· If you plan to run multiple instances, each instance requires the memory listed for one server. Multiply the memory for one server by the number of instances planned for the system.

Minimum memory: 4 GB for small production servers. A server is considered to be small if it has the following characteristics:

· It does not use storage pool deduplication.

· It supports only a small number of clients, or the nightly backup data transferred is 100 GB or less.

· It is used only as a library manager.

· On a machine having only 4 GB of RAM, only a single server is being run.

For more details about deduplication, search the keyword deduplication.

32-bit Windows systems:

Recommended memory: 8 GB

Minimum memory:
4 GB for small production servers (A server is considered to be small if it has the following characteristics:
· It supports only a small number of clients, or the nightly backup data transferred is 100 GB or less.
· It is used only as a library manager.
· On a machine having only 4 GB of RAM, only a single server is being run. )

· Deduplication is not supported.

· Running more than one server instance on a system is not supported.

· Might not be appropriate for all workloads because of real memory limitations, for example, hundreds of clients assigned to one server. Or, fewer clients with a heavier data workload (hundreds in gigabytes or greater than one terabyte per 24-hour backup cycle).

· Large production servers may require more than the recommended amount of memory.

Additional information to consider:

If the intention is to run with less than the recommended amount of memory, it is further suggested that this configuration be tested under those circumstances to determine that this will support the intended workload in this particular environment. Or if V6.1 servers are already implemented in these less then recommended memory environments, that would also provide a proof point that this may be suitable for these particular environments.
Operating System
One of the following operating systems, however, some functionality is not available on the 32-bit systems. Check the system memory requirements for more details.
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003: Standard, Enterprise, or Datacenter Edition, Service Pack 2 or later.

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008: Standard, Enterprise, or Datacenter Edition (all service packs supported)
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008: Standard, Enterprise, or Datacenter x64 Edition (64-bit) (all service packs supported)
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2: Standard, Enterprise, or Datacenter Edition (64-bit) (all service packs supported)
