What is the difference between Cognos, Native and Pass-Through SQL Syntax?

Question

When using custom SQL code in a Cognos Report, the report designer needs to set the SQL Syntax property.  There are three possible settings for this, Cognos, Native and Pass-Through.  What are the differences between them?
