What are the implications of enabling more than one batch service?

Troubleshooting

Problem

Controller runs certain jobs (for example consolidations and data mart publishes) as part of a 'batch job' mechanism.
By default, Controller only runs 1 batch job at a time.
  • However, Controller can be configured to have multiple (for example 2, 3, 4, 5...) separate batch jobs running simultaneously.
In general terms, it is best for most customers to only have one batch job running concurrently.
  • Why is this?
  • What are the benefits/drawbacks to having more than one batch job process running?

Symptom

On the Controller application server, there is a single Windows service called "IBM Cognos Controller Batch Service".
  • This is the Windows service which is responsible for checking (and then triggering/running) batch jobs (such as consolidations).

The number of batch jobs that can be processed (simultaneously) is governed by the "Max number of concurrent batch jobs" setting (inside 'Controller Configuration').
  • The default setting is 1 (so only one batch job runs at a time):

You can easily increase it, for example to 2:

TIP: After making the changes, you need to save and press 'Restart' for the changes to take effect.
