What are ghost documents and can they be removed from a database?

Question & Answer

What are ghost documents? How can they be removed from a database?

Ghost documents, or ghost notes, are an important part of the Notes/Domino functionality. It should not be necessary to delete them and it is not advised.

The typical scenario where a ghost note is created is as follows:
When the parent document of a response document has been deleted, the response document is considered an orphan. Although the parent document has been deleted, it still has children, and different Notes or Domino features may create a shell parent document as a placeholder (to help keep track of the children). For example, this placeholder creation occurs during replication. This shell parent document is typically referred to as a ghost document or ghost note.
