WebSphere Application Server Co-Existence with Other Versions

Troubleshooting

Problem

The following document will discuss the coexistence support of running multiple WebSphere Application Server versions on a single partition

Resolving The Problem

Co-existing, as it applies to WebSphere Application Server products, is running a new release of a WebSphere Application Server product on the same machine at the same time as you run an earlier release or running two installations of the same release of a WebSphere Application Server product on the same machine at the same time.

You should refer to the following URLs for more information on co-existence support with WebSphere Application Server:
http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SS7JFU_8.5.5/com.ibm.websphere.migration.express.iseries.doc/ae/cmig_coexist.html

http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSAW57_9.0.0/com.ibm.websphere.migration.nd.iseries.doc/ae/tins_coexistep.html

You can create an environment in which multiple versions of WebSphere Application Server can run independently on the same system at the same time. A major consideration in co-existence is the avoidance of port conflicts. Port conflicts can occur when more than one application server is configured to use one or more of the same ports. If the two application servers which share one or more ports are started, the second application server started will fail since one or more ports are already in use by the first application server started. Typically, this is seen with the default application server profile. The default ports configured for the default profile are the same between versions and releases of WebSphere Application Server.

It is recommended that all in-use application server port ranges are identified so any new application server configurations do not use any ports in these ranges. For more information on configuring port settings and the default port number settings, you should refer to the following URLs.
