"Warning 510" when running IF commands

Troubleshooting

Problem

I am running a series of IF commands with an INDEX function. COMPUTE target_var=0. IF (index(string_var,"1")) target_var=1. I continually get the following warning message: >Warning # 510 >During execution of the indicated command, an expression which should have >yielded a logical value produced a value other than 0, 1, or missing. The >result has been set to the system-missing value. What is the reason for this error?
