Wake On LAN does not work in Linux after normal system shutdown. The system will not wake up after receiving any type of wake up packet. The system can power on from the normal push button operation.

The tg3_and bnx2 Device Driver for the Broadcom NetXtreme I and II_Ethernet Controllers is affected.

Solution

Use the command ethtool -s XX wol g for each port that should support WoL, where XX is eth0, eth1, etc. This can be done in a network startup script.

The following is a sample script where changes have been made to make WoL work.

For Red Hat:

edit the file: /etc/init.d/network If -f /var/run/confirm ; then confirm $i test $? = 1 and continue fi action $"Bringing up interface $i: " ./ifup $i boot action $"Setting WoL: " /sbin/ethtool -s $i wol g done

For SUSE:

edit the file: /etc/init.d/network (57% through the file) for S in $SUCCESS_IFACES: do test "$IFACE" - "$S" and continue 2 ethtool -s $IFACE wol g and> /dev/null #add this line done

Additional information

The default operation of both the tg3 and bnx2 drivers is to disable Wake On LAN . The ethtool -s XX wol g command (where XX is the ethernet port) overrides this default and enables Wake On LAN operation on the target port.
